make the world a greener place and you could win up to $100 in cash!!! Click here for details
We no longer use paper napkins and limited paper towels. We use cloths instead.
We've signed up with Terracycle and recycle all our juice pouches and cookie wrappers.
We'ev switched cleaning products to more eco-friendly versions.
1. We sold one car and are a one car family, which means carpools, weekly grocery shopping instead of daily, etc.
2. We "recycle clothing and toys" at resale shops or through craigslist, and we buy new items from these places too.
3. We buy local on food...we don't necessarily need to buy organic if you know how the local farmer is growing your food ;-)
1. We think about our purchases more nowadays. Whether it's a need or want. And if we could potentially fix things that are broken instead of just replacing them.
2. We have cut down on energy usage. It takes constant reminders however, it is worth it.
3. I try to minimize the number of trips to the grocery store. I try to buy at least 2 weeks worth of groceries at one time.
1. Baking soda will clean just about anything and it is cheap, cheap, cheap!! You can even use it as a wash for veggies and fruit. Just put some in water and rinse or place veggies/fruit in a BPA-free colander and sprinkle soda over the top and rinse. Click HERE for SIXTY USES OF BAKING SODA!
2. Stop using plastic water bottles - each time you drink from a plastic water bottle, you are contributing to the 1.5 Million: barrels of oil it takes to make bottled water in the U.S. each year (enough energy to power 250,000 homes). Four out of 5 water bottles do not make it into our recycling bins and, instead end up in our rivers, streams, lakes, oceans and landfills. Plus, every time you drink from a plastic water bottle, your BPA levels go up 70%. The jury is still out in the US but BPA's have been linked to cancer in animals. A recent study showed a correlation between moms who had high levels of BPA in the first trimester of pregnancy to having 2 year old girls who are hyperactive. Get yourself a stainless steel container for yourself and each member of your family or just use a glass. Think of how much money you spend on those darn cases of bottled water...?
3. Turn off the water when you are brushing your teeth - Just doing this will save about three gallons of water. Think water is an endless resource? It's not. Just ask people who live in California. Republican Senator Dave Cogdill says the Delta, and California, can’t go on like this.“We have a system that was built for 18 million people,” Cogdill said. “There are now 38 million of us, and as a result of some pretty extraordinary technology and conservation efforts, we’ve been able to get by. But we all know that we’re all living on borrowed time.” Our future water supply is dependent upon our conservation efforts of today.
Most importantly, open your mind and stay informed...visit blogs, join green communities, and share info with your friends!! It's not about guilt, it's about information. Our future depends on our knowledge and actions. What choices will you make today that will change your health and the health of our world tomorrow?
Green Living a bit of an obsession with me. I save everything in my path for recycling to the extent of even pocketing those little paper cups with Costco samples. I am so into reusing, I take the paper tags off tea bags to put in recycle bin while I put the used tea leaves as compost. My recycle bin fills up much quicker than my garbage bin. As for water, I live in the Sonoran Desert in Arizona, and have been instructed to conserve water from the first day here. Only low-water use plants and drip watering systems in the landscape. Maybe a bit overboard? I don't think so! It all adds up.
My three tips are
1) we now use reuseable snack bags
2) no more plastic water bottles, i now have a stainless steel BPA free termos
3) started a compost pile
Just a quick review, for the sake of, I don't know, saving the planet.
Beth Aldrich and Airwear are teaming up to make sure everyone knows that there are greener choices out there.
Some of the choices we have made are to buy locally when ever possible. If you have a fresh market in your area, you should find out what local farmers are growing. I promise that you will find a lot of healthy choices and you will also be supporting your local growers.
Another greener choice is to use cloth grocery bags when you go shopping I wrote about it here. If you will just buy one bag every time you go to the store, before you know it you won't have to use any plastic bags and you will be saving money. Yes, that right! Many local stores will reimburse you whenever you use your cloth bags.
Most recently, I wrote about using filtered water instead of bottled water. Plastic bottles aren't not only bad for mother earth, the chemical are dangerous to our bodies too!
Another environmentally friendly thing we do around here is to recycle.
Any and all of these choices are great. And don't forget that Airwear is using environmentally conscious practices. For example they use 100 percent recycled water and 100 percent recyclable packaging.
Oh, and for those who are plagued with noxious paint fumes, the University of Southern Miss's
polymer science department had developed an environmentally friendly paint. You can read more about it here.
We use don't buy disposable products (diapers, menstrual products, paper towel, napkins, etc.) We collect rain water and compost for tending to our plants. We buy local for almost all of our food. We reuse and recycle almost everything that comes through our house so we don't produce much garbage.
1. I give presentations on toxins and chemicals in the home and how important it is to remove them. I do this at libraries around my area.
2. My husband and I have 2 SUV's but he rides his bike 14 miles a day to work instead of driving the jeep.
3. I'm partnered up with a green company that only sells natural and organic products. I share this store with everyone I know.
