Are You Planning on Cutting Back on Your Holiday Shopping This Year Because of The Economy?

  • Rating: 4.7 after 4 votes
Hi Twittermoms,

Having an online giftstore, I am very nervous about sales this Holiday Season and I wanted to see if you were cutting back this year due to the economy. I am going to be scaling back myself and am planning on using a lot of my own gifts from my store and making salad dressings and giving my photos as gifts. What are your plans? Have they changed?

Looking forward to hearing from you all!

Honestly I hope no one cuts back this year. But times are a changing as they say. I also run a beauty site so I am working out deals to find ways to help whomever orders money and time. Myself? I usually give my husband something and got two boys over 20 so I pretty much know all ready what they want. lol games as always.

You make homemade Christmas cards? How awesome of a idea! Our family and friends expect a humor filled Christmas card from us but I could really use some tips on creating my own for customers. I send them out every year because a handwritten card means a lot.
Where do you get your ideas from?

Hi,
I think we will spending about the same. We will be cutting back not because of the economy, but to reduce the STUFF. I don't like buying for the sake of just getting something. However, it is my intention to do my shopping online. It saves time and gas! You can usually find free shipping deals.

We're not very good at scaling back. Every year I intend to and every year we fail. So this year, we've saved up money dedicated to gifts, we started shopping early, and I'm making a commitment to buy as many handmade gifts as possible to help support the small indie businesses around the country that are probably going to be hit hardest.

For the last few years my husband and I stopped giving each other gifts. We don't need anything and enjoy spending the day celebrating with family. We give gifts to our little niece and nephew, but not the adults. We are going to take our favorite vacation photo this year and print out several copies, frame them and give them to our parents this year for Christmas. I hear alot of people talking about cutting back, but we are still early in the holiday shopping season.

We blogged about this on September 30 and added a poll. Our findings were about what we expected.

http://sisterstalk.tblog.com/post/1970020834

46% of our respondents said they will spend less
3% said they would spend more
19% said they will spend about what they spent last year
32% said they were broke, just like they were last year

We need to post the follow-up to this blog soon.

I always do nearly all of the Christmas shopping for our family and have always included homemade gifts for hostess gifts and the like. At the end of every holiday season, I stock up on seasonal baskets at a deep discount. This year though, I will be cutting back a bit more -- mostly on what we spend on adults. I just haven't figured out how yet.

I am also contemplating asking my friends to take a year off of holiday gifts for each other. But I am not set on that yet.

We have to cut back this year. We have had a very bad time of it this year housing wise so things will be a little leaner than previous years. Handmade items (which are better in my opinion) and draw names from a hat type thing because there are 22 of us and no way to buy for everyone. The kids are most important to me.

Sorry to hear that about your housing situation Jennifer. Wow, 22 people, that is a lot, smart to draw names! We have a very small family. I agree about handmade items. I bought a lot of hand made and fair trade items when I was doing the buying for my store. I wish you all the best with your house!

I agree with you guys, I think the media has done a good job at scaring everyone! I probably do overspend at Christmas, but this is THE SEASON to give, and to love, and to share, and spend time with your loved ones...friends, and also spreading a little cheer to strangers on the street! If we let the media scare us, and we do cut back our spending, then there will be an economy problem.

I've been feeling the same way. The malls are still busy, the lines are still long... I'm sure that between gas prices and some other eco issues there are people out there really struggling to get by, but it doesn't seem as widespread as the media claims it is.

I will continue shopping like a rockstar, as I always do. The economy isn't as bad as they claim to be on the news media. I personal think that the news media is part of the problem with the economy in causing widespread fear! I know that that may be a little naive, as some people have been laid off or lost a job...my husband is one of them. However, when you go to the store or go out to eat, there are still lines and waits everywhere. I have my own lingerie store, so I may be giving more PJ shirts / sleepwear to my girlfriends than usual, but I always go all out for my family gifts. I have already started shopping.
