Are You Planning on Cutting Back on Your Holiday Shopping This Year Because of The Economy?

  • Rating: 4.7 after 4 votes
Hi Twittermoms,

Having an online giftstore, I am very nervous about sales this Holiday Season and I wanted to see if you were cutting back this year due to the economy. I am going to be scaling back myself and am planning on using a lot of my own gifts from my store and making salad dressings and giving my photos as gifts. What are your plans? Have they changed?

Looking forward to hearing from you all!

Great to hear this Jana & Jessica!

I agree with you guys, I think the media has done a good job at scaring everyone! I probably do overspend at Christmas, but this is THE SEASON to give, and to love, and to share, and spend time with your loved ones...friends, and also spreading a little cheer to strangers on the street! If we let the media scare us, and we do cut back our spending, then there will be an economy problem.

I've been feeling the same way. The malls are still busy, the lines are still long... I'm sure that between gas prices and some other eco issues there are people out there really struggling to get by, but it doesn't seem as widespread as the media claims it is.

I will continue shopping like a rockstar, as I always do. The economy isn't as bad as they claim to be on the news media. I personal think that the news media is part of the problem with the economy in causing widespread fear! I know that that may be a little naive, as some people have been laid off or lost a job...my husband is one of them. However, when you go to the store or go out to eat, there are still lines and waits everywhere. I have my own lingerie store, so I may be giving more PJ shirts / sleepwear to my girlfriends than usual, but I always go all out for my family gifts. I have already started shopping.

Not really.
The budget is pretty much the same, because recession is not any kid's fault. So I don't think they should suffer. Same for friends and close family. This year's been messy enough and we celebrate Christmas once a year not every day. So it's well worth it.

Everyone I know is very nervous. Every couple of days a new group are on the chopping block. I think people aren't going to be so obvious with their spending. The big parties are on the back burner, but a little something always makes someone smile. My favorite affordable gift is a magazine subscription. For $20 they get to pick out of 50 mags. I always buy a few just in case, it fits everyone.

That's a great idea Michele! My friend got me a subscription last year and I loved it!

We are cutting back - but not because of the economy - more because we really don't have a "need" for anything. Instead, we are going to buy the accessories that go with the "big ticket items" we already have - games for the game systems, gear for the road bikes, music for the ipods, etc. We tend to be more generous with the presents throughout the year and then Christmas sort of renews those items by allowing us the opportunity to just add to what already exists in our home. We don't have a lot of people to buy so that really helps our situation, too.

I'm big into homemade and unique gifts so I'll either do my own or buy homemade items from others and support small businesses. I have a huge family (9 sibs plus 20+ nieces/nephews and inlaws) so holidays can be exorbitantly expensive. But I'll probably do more things like make cookie mixes, blankets, or give a "gift of time" like offer to make dinner for two nights for my one sibling, or offer babysitting hours to my sister-in-law so our kids have time to play together while she enjoys some time to herself.

I have no plans to buy anything except for a couple of things for my son and hubby. The rest of my family gets a picture they can frame. And when I shop for hubby and son I will doing so in places like Goodwill or Craigslist or once upon a child.
