Celebrities on Twitter: Your thoughts?

  • Rating: 5 after 4 votes
What's everyone think about celebrities jumping on the Twitter bandwagon?

While Britney Spears is getting all the attention today, I've stumbled across everyone from William Shatner to Dave Matthews to my local Bay Area favorite, MC Hammer. Even Penn Jillette has tweets.

What do you think of the whole phenomenon? Do you follow any celebrity Twitterers?

P.S. My favorite Twitter semi-celebrity is Tony Hsieh -- the CEO of Zappos. He cracks me up with tweets like this one:

@zappos: My favorite thing... is the "Don't Ever Click Here" link near the bottom right - http://zeta.zappos.com

Well, I'll be honest... I don't really keep up with celebs on t.v., I'm probably not going to start following them on Twitter.

Not me. I doubt it's even really them to be honest.

I've been following Rachel Maddow (@maddow), and today I made a semi-disparaging comment about her. Next thing I knew, she (or possibly a producer) was following me!

I follow a few...but to be honest I'm not all that sure it is really them...some of them haven't even updated since last year.

Just about everyone I know tweets..why not a celeb?

I saw that Britney Spears tweeting earlier too Megan.

Anyhoo, I don't want to follow celebs around. Seems like it would mostly be self-promotion and that would become annoying real fast. Or completely useless nonsense -- think of what Paris Hilton's tweets must be like.

I do enjoy watching the banter between FakeSarahPalin, FakeJohnMcCain, FakeBarackObama and FakeJoeBiden.

I follow Michael W. Smith and Brandon Heath, two of my favorite Christian musicians. I got their twitter info off of the twitter pages of my favorite Christian radio personalities at Thejoyfm. They are the one who introduced me to Twitter by talking about it on air.

I'm so not into following any celebs especially Brittany...my time is to precious to get caught up with that..the ones I follow are those whom I feel I can learn something meaningful from...and to be honest any celebs w/lots of drama is meaningless...in my opinion.

I follow Kanye West, but I am also a fan of his blog...so that's not a big step. Other than that, I've found that some people follow the fictional characters of their favorite shows, like entourage.

how can you know if its really them, I mean couldn't be like their publicist?

I'm following Stephen Fry - he's famous this side of the Atlantic, and he's following me. I don't think I'd bother following Britney though.

That's a good point! I know the chap I'm following also blogs and is very tech savvy - he's been using the internet since the 90s - but I suspect a lot of them probably wouldn't have the time or inclination to tweet themselves.
