Celebrities on Twitter: Your thoughts?

  • Rating: 5 after 4 votes
What's everyone think about celebrities jumping on the Twitter bandwagon?

While Britney Spears is getting all the attention today, I've stumbled across everyone from William Shatner to Dave Matthews to my local Bay Area favorite, MC Hammer. Even Penn Jillette has tweets.

What do you think of the whole phenomenon? Do you follow any celebrity Twitterers?

P.S. My favorite Twitter semi-celebrity is Tony Hsieh -- the CEO of Zappos. He cracks me up with tweets like this one:

@zappos: My favorite thing... is the "Don't Ever Click Here" link near the bottom right - http://zeta.zappos.com

How would you know its really them? But then I guess with crazy people out there, how do you really know I'm me? I really am me, by the way.

I started to follow Dave Matthews and it only validates how weird he really is!

I'm not a big celebrity person, but I have been following Dave Matthews for awhile now. There's just something about him that I like. Oh, and Santa Clause started following me last week, so I'm following him back - I mean ya' gotta' follow Santa right? LOL! Other than that I'm not overly interested in following celebs - although if Johnny Depp starts twittering, watch out ;o)

Have a great one!

I think it is neat that they are becoming more like the rest of us. Who says they can't play online, I mean imagine how life would be without the net. Well as a celebrity many have to hide who they are and hope no one catches on, otherwise they los it all. I think we were all shocked to see Britney Spears on twtter but took it in. I love Zappos as well and if I'm not mistaken Allison Sweeney (days of our lives) is also twittering. It just makes the world seem like a bit smaller and more friendly.

I guess I'm not really fascinated by celebs (actors in any sense and/or musicians) so much that I feel the want, to follow them. I do however get a kick out of following people like Kevin Rose, Alex Albrecht, and Dr. Tiki (Jeff Macpherson), etc. They are funny and send great links. In my opinion they ARE celebs but on a more "down to earth", "person who I could actually meet one day", more attainable kin of way. (If that makes any sense at all.) LOL

That's cool Jill, I follow Alex, Jeff and Danny from Totally Rad Show, and Kevin from Diggnation, and a bunch others from the old call for help days and off air personalities. They are more down to earth, becasue they are "semicelebs". We're a big tech household here, so having watched them on Tech TV and then lost the shows, it is nice to follow them on Twitter too.

I don;t think I'd have any interest in following anyone like Britney spears, or tom cruise or anyone "hollywood".. Though maybe following country musicians more then movie stars would be appealing to me I think.

I just started following a couple of Christian 'celebs', but literally that's been just in the past couple of days. I happened to find out they were on Twitter and started following them. I didn't really search for them.

Funny... i was reading this thread thinking the exact same thing! online anyone could be anyone... what people say online doesn't always translate into what they are really like or who they are... i'm not saying that there is anything wrong with that, just that your *friends* online are really that, until you know someone in *real* life you don't really know them.

So follow anyone you find interesting and tweet with them to your hearts content, celeb, tv character, writer, sports star, mommy!!! Just don't feel that your online bond is the same as a real face-to-face friendship and you will be just fine ;-)

I follow people I think of as celebrities - Max Lucado, Bart Millard from MercyMe, Juan and Mark Hall from Casting Crowns, Mark L. from 3rd Day, Natalie Grant. (I hope I didn't forget anyone.)

I think it's neat to see the little quips they have to say. Sort of lets you see another side of them - which in their professions as Christian musicians and speakers, that could be a good or bad thing ;).

I have to admit, I don't keep up with a lot of Hollywood types. But being a "recovering news producer", I can't help but follow some of the newsy twitterers- Anderson Cooper, Rachel Maddow, Keith Olbermann, Rick Sanchez (he actually uses a lot of the tweets on his CNN show!), Don Lemon, etc. They all do their own tweets- no interns on a blackberry...lol.

I'm so sick of hearing about celebs that it never crossed my mind to find them on twitter. I'm also cynical and don't believe it's really them.

I think I just got followed by some TV characters. (Is Mad Men a TV show? I don't get out much.) The idea of people tweeting as their characters is a little strange to me.
