Celebrities on Twitter: Your thoughts?

  • Rating: 5 after 4 votes
What's everyone think about celebrities jumping on the Twitter bandwagon?

While Britney Spears is getting all the attention today, I've stumbled across everyone from William Shatner to Dave Matthews to my local Bay Area favorite, MC Hammer. Even Penn Jillette has tweets.

What do you think of the whole phenomenon? Do you follow any celebrity Twitterers?

P.S. My favorite Twitter semi-celebrity is Tony Hsieh -- the CEO of Zappos. He cracks me up with tweets like this one:

@zappos: My favorite thing... is the "Don't Ever Click Here" link near the bottom right - http://zeta.zappos.com

I think Twittering has become another way for celebs, politicians, companies, people, etc to further promote themselves or projects they are working on in a less direct way.

I am in the sports/Tennis business and follow a tennis player or two.

I'm with Kate - I follow Stephen Fry, the actor from the UK. And he follows back. He writes really interesting stuff about his current visit in Africa and what he's filming. I find this interesting.

Does it really matter that celebrities are using these type of sites to self-promote. Aren't we doing the same??

As long as they add interesting tweets, I would be interested in their life, work etc. But not Britney Sprears - I'm not a fan. That said, she obviously has a huge fan base who would follow her.

I would only follow those who I find interesting.

Take care

I think it's cool that celebrities. or someone in their entourage, are twittering. It makes them seem a little more accessible, IMO.

I guess I'm not really fascinated by celebs (actors in any sense and/or musicians) so much that I feel the want, to follow them. I do however get a kick out of following people like Kevin Rose, Alex Albrecht, and Dr. Tiki (Jeff Macpherson), etc. They are funny and send great links. In my opinion they ARE celebs but on a more "down to earth", "person who I could actually meet one day", more attainable kin of way. (If that makes any sense at all.) LOL

I've been following Dave Matthews and Stefan Lessard (of DMB) since they joined Twitter; I also follow Obama & Hillary's campaign people (it's not "them"). With Dave & Stefan, it's fairly obvious that it's actually them posting (they even post photos).

I think it's interesting and humanizing to hear and see things that these guys post; it's also, quite frankly, very entertaining.

I'll have to check out some of those other celebs... Like William Shatner... That sounds interesting!

PS: I was actually posting to a local band's talkboard, trying to get them to be on Twitter... It's a great vehicle for announcing tour dates, benefit dates and promoting their music! I don't think people typically see Twitter as a "marketing tool," but, as with other social network sites, it really can be!

His tweets are interesting aren't they? And it's amazing how eloquent he is with so few characters. Having said that, today he used the word 'PWN', I never thought I'd see the day LOL

I actually got followed by "kit the car" from the tv show, LOL, actually their pr dept. as (my day job has some celb components) anyhow, the persona was silly and tough guy acting so I played along and then hooked the car up with Chuck Norris twits, (very funny stream btw) and a battle of who is the biggest crime fighter ensued. tee hee

But typically celbs looking to engage will use pen names, otherwise most likely it is their marketing or pub agency twittering, Penn, well that was/is the real deal.

I agree, how do you know it's really them? I saw Adrien Grenier on Facebook - I highly doubt that one! LOL He hardly needs to be on Facebook at the moment. If they are A-list stars, I doubt it's them...if they are "washed up" - well, maybe!!

If they want to join in, go for it. To me it just seems like a bigger cry for attention in cases like Brittney.

Chances are unless it was someone I was absolutely crazy about, I wouldn't follow them. I really am not that big on celebrities. I am enjoying following some of the authors that I like on Twitter.
