Fireplaces and younglings

  • Rating: No Rating
So, the cooler weather has started to come down. It's Fall, it happens. I prefer the hot summers, myself, though.

Anyway... This is Little Bit's first "real" holiday season, since he was still very young last year. We had a fireplace at our last apartment, and have one here as well. Last year was so cozy, because hubby and I would curl up in front of a warm fire and I was breastfeeding our son while a movie played or something. *insert faroff gaze daydreaming of the days of past perfection*

Right now we have three tables (yeah) and two boxes stacked up in front of the fireplace so the boy who "idles at 40 MPH" doesn't go exploring.

Would you still try to have a fire with the little ones around under close supervision, or would you avoid striking up the cozy fires for the season and wait until the next year?

That's a tough one. I would probably try to move the boxes away before it's time to start the fire and teach the little ones to stay away. That way it gives you a little time to work with. If they're too young to teach that, I'd probably wait another year. You'll be too stressed out trying to keep them from harm to get cozy.

When my kids were little I found a gate that bolted to the wall and had a swing gate that went around the fireplace. I think i got it at www.rightstart.com. i don't know if that place is still around, but it was wonderful!

Hi Cara,
We have a fireplace and, as you know, 2 little boys.
We never stopped using it but always under strict supervision and we explained everything.
We have a fireplace with a glass-door in front of it. So we don't need to worry about sparks which is a good thing.

Now the eldest is almost 5 and he "helps" daddy lighting the fire and is very careful. He always watches his little brother (3) very closely that he doesn't do any stupid things.

They take a big pillow, put it in front of the fire and stare into it. It is lovely.

I think the easiest way is to get the kids used to it and explain them everything so the curiosity will no grow too big and make it dangerously. So far it works fine. Keep my fingers crossed it stays that way.

Is it a gas one with a glass plate in front of it? If so..the only thing i would recommend is be in the room at all times while the firplace is on...and it stays hot for hours afterwards...so in that regard....unless you want to chain the child to your hip...I'd wait on the fireplace until he is old enough to understand that fireplaces are not toys and are dangerous.
