Do you guys still go "all out" for a family Sunday dinner? Or do you just go out to dinner?

I'm thinking of starting a tradition of a family dinner... more special than the rest of the days of the week. Those of you who do it, what do you do that makes it special?

I think all meals can be special if you are all together. We don't do anything extra special on Sunday...dinner is just dinner around here. Sunday is one of the few days where we can all count on being together for now, but nothing more than that goes into it. =) Good luck with your new venture!!

I love having a big family meal on Sundays. We used to all go to my uncle's house after Church and pitch in and make a big lunch, but now our Church provides a great lunch for us every week (and we all take turns helping with the clean up : ) It's a lot of fun for everyone to pitch in and help with the cooking and clean up. I think that just having everyone together is what really makes it special.

About 4 years ago, we started making Sunday lunch a special meal. We try to have another family or college students (we live near Texas A&M) for lunch after church. It doesn't have to be anything fancy, but it's great to have time together as a family & with friends. Most of my friends go out to eat on Sunday, but we spend more time together when we eat at home. It's a little extra work for me to be prepared, but we all pitch in once we get home from church.

This isn't set in stone, so we don't do it every weekend. Today my hubby was out of town, so we ordered pizza and watched the Dallas Cowboys together. The main thing is we eat together...and when your kids are older (15,18,20) you treasure those times you spend together.

Good luck...

Before my youngest son was diagnosed with a wheat allergy we used to do pretty well with Sunday dinners. Now, the elder children can't really be bothered and the youngest of our lot jumps in with both hands and sometimes a foot or plastic toy.
Sunday dinner prep would begin around noon and it was always something the kids would get to help with. I remember one sunday at my parent's house making eggrolls and wontons with Dad yelling "You no work, you no get egg roll!" They seem to like it better when they have a hand in making it. We've made all sorts of hand rolled things. I tried to make sure it's something that has lots of vegetables and huge chunks of fun.
Having to deal with constantly changing taste preferences, allergies and teen angst within a really tight budget kind of killed it around our house.
Nightly dinner is just the kids at the table. It's the one time the 5 of them have to sit and really talk to each other without fighting over a toy or remote control. I'm nearby so that I can moderate if I need to, but it's their time together. When my partner is home, she sits at the table with them because they don't get as much time with her as they'd like.

I make breakfast on Sunday mornings (muffins, baked oatmeal, baked french toast, anything hot and filling). I also have designated it Soup Sunday. It is perfect for football games. Great in the slow cooker if you'll be out during the day. We love it!

We used to do that, moreso when my brother and I were younger and we didn't have as much on the agendas.

These days, we usually do a bigger Sunday lunch and just pick around for dinners.
