Have you ever UN-followed someone and why?

I've never un-followed anyone yet but I'm selective about who I follow. I don't follow every who follows me, nor do I expect everyone I follow to return the favor, although it's nice if they do. When someone new follows me I look at their profile to see if there is a personal connection, or common interest, what their twitter content is, their number of followers, how many they are following and the web site their profile links to. I like to find new people to follow through the @username posts of the people I'm following.

I unfollow those who don't follow me back and/or respond to my tweets. In the beginning, I followed everyone back who followed me. Now with over 700 followers, that is harder to do, but I do follow the majority who follow me. I am a prolific tweeter, though lately I have tweeted less because I have been busy.

I have unfollowed over politics, but only when the person was really obnoxious. I am pretty opinionated about mine, so if people want to unfollow, that's up to them.

I immediately block those who are spamming, and I don't follow those trying to sell me stuff. I won't block them, though.

I haven't unfollowed anyone yet, but I would if someone was posting offensive stuff. I'm also thinking of unfollowing a few people who seem to have a huge number of followers but aren't reciprocating - to me that seems more like a fan club than real communication.

I have unfollowed a couple of twitterers. One because I couldn't handle the language he used in his tweets, it was offensive. And another because she was promoting something and every three minutes it was 3 more hours till.. and 2hours 58 minutes till. and Ask this and get this every other tweet in between. Couldn't handle it anymore. Some of the others are laborious as well but tolerable.

I have unfollowed a few people for the following reasons:
- spamming (like the fu-man-chu quotes that get spewed all day long)

- if they are graphically foul, I'm a foul mouth myself, but I can control myself, there are some on twitter that are purposefully trying to be as foul as possible.

- We never make a connection. I have a lot of followers and I follow quite a few people. Some I've only talked to once, but I try to talk to all my followers and I would hope the same in return.

I have to add though, I do follow some like @officemate just because it's just so funny even if technically he'd be a spammer.

Thanks for asking this question. I just asked this yesterday on Twitter because someone said she heard at Blog Her this was NOT acceptable, spamming your blog on Twitter.

The few people that responded back to me said that they think it is totally fine spamming your blog; however, only when you have updates and not something inflammatory, etc. And so long as that person just isn't their to spam his/her own stuff--it's all about give and take.

I know personally I don't care at all, however, if someone continually reposts the same blog post, that would be irksome.

I have unfollowed people that send only commercial Twitters. I know Twitter is a wonderful marketing tool and I use it myself for the aid to rescue work I do, but it's nice to have a REAL person behind some of the Twitters. I even expressed to my followers that it made me feel bad to unfollow someone and I got the good advice that I shouldn't feel bad about unfollowing someone that never knew I was there following in the first place. Twittering for it's marketing value - yay Twittering PURELY as a commercial activity with no human interaction - nay as one in my 'follow' list

I agree with you on the give and take. I like seeing others blog posts. I find them fun and often informative and I hope others feel the same about mine... however the majority of my tweets are random thoughts through the day. I think there should always be a balance. If someone only promotes their blog, they come off as being insincere. And who wants that?

I un-follow people who do not twit, or I post people who twit things that bother me. I stopped following someone who would start every twit with F*** that person (did not matter who they were talking about) is such a *****.

I'm actually in the process of trying to pare down my follows. I take off those who haven't Twittered in a while or those who are just sending out link after link in their updates.

I unfollow when people post too often about things I can't relate to or when they only pimp their own posts. I enjoy different points of view.
