Anyone really worried about the state of our economy?

I hate to admit it, but I've always just rode through life not paying attention to the economy. I leave that up to those that actually have an interest in economics! But I'm realizing its time to get in quick and understand where our nation is headed. The frightening part for me is that the whole situation is so overwhelming! I think I am going to start small, make sure my investments, savings etc are all secured, pay off as much debt as possible and try to stay positive.

Certainly I worry about the economy for myself and my family. I am especially concerned over family pets. People being forced out of their homes by foreclosure, high prices at the grocery store, and the economy in general is forcing more pets into shelters. Shelters are already overpopulated. I can't even begin to imagine the heartbreak that comes with having to give up a four legged member of the family. Unfortunately, as we all cut our budgets, charitable giving is one of the first things to go, so the shelters that all these pets are now 'guests' at are more stretched then ever to meet costs.

I laid off my sole remaining employee yesterday and am moving my office back to my house. I have had two clients each month go out of business. I'm going to concentrate on writing for the internet and web hosting, give up on securing federal contracts for the time being (I write on the environment, strategic planning, and Indian affairs for the government and all those areas will be cut back) and just ride it out. I'm sure I will be okay but I worry about everyone who was depending on me for their income.

Well, it's great that you have investments and savings to worry about (well, maybe anyway.) I am 36 and my husband's retirement account is all that we have. I have also just moved and am looking for work just to make ends meet. My husband makes good money and is fairly stable, but we have a lot of expenses coming from two houses that we are unable to sell or rent out at enough to cover the expenses. My greatest focus has been on staying informed while not panicking and trying to find the best way to make all of this work for me. My latest research has been on recession proof industries and carreers. So far I feel that I have made some leeway. I just try to remember that no matter how hard it gets, I'm still young enough to come back from it. . . just need to keep from panicking and letting it rub off on my daughter.

Yes I have been out of work for 9months and still hunting for jobs ... employer are interested but never materialize with an offer ... so yes I am really worried ...

I am scared to death about our economy, right now our elected officials can do a lot to fix the problem, however I don't think they really know how. Common sense is lost on them. So for that i am scared.

I hadn't even thought of how our furry friends are being impacted. Its just depressing all around. Something needs to give soon and turn things around

I do think about it and rethink what I do with our money. Decisions about what to pay, how much to pay, and what to buy are defintely thought out way more than they used to be.
I am worried about my job because I do mortgage related work for a company that I'm hoping stays afloat. Too many lenders have closed up or consolidated. So this does keep me a little on eggshells. I just continue to do my job the best that I can and try not to think about it.
I read one gal's tip to live off of one income but I make the entire household income and so that is not an option for us. It is a nice way to live but is not always an option.
It was nice reading other's viewpoints on this.

We are fine but I see people I know having major financial issues. Then i have some friends that are doing even better than before! Lots of workers being laid off in my husbands industry of construction.

I can't worry about something that I can't control. All I can do is continue to get up each morning, go to work, take care of my kids the best I can, and ignore doom-and-gloom sources that just want to scare me without offering any real information or helpful solutions.

It's unfortunate that our state of economy is in turmoil now. I try not to dwell on it especially knowing its out of my control, but I do sympathize with the many families affected by it, especially all the local mom & pop businesses we have here in Hawaii. However I continue to remain positive and be more creative as well as making wise choices when shopping.
