My 14 yr old son and husband went to the hunting camp last night. My son wanted to ride his 4-wheeler around the camp. Since it was about out of gas, they took a can of gas to fill it up. My son wanted to pour the gas in the tank. While he was pouring the gas in, the gas can and tank caught on fire. Flames were shooting up about 4ft in the air. My son and husband run from the 4-wheeler and sat the gas can on the ground. It was a good thing they didn't just drop the gas can or it would probably exploded catching them both on fire.
Someone in the camp house came running out with a fire extinguisher and luckily put out the fire before much damage was done. They were all standing around trying to figure out why the gas can and tank caught on fire. My son has a saddle bag that lays across the tank on the 4-wheeler. After the fire was put out, he reached in the charred saddle bag and took out his cell phone he had in one of the compartments. Mystery solved.
My sons sister had sent him a text message while he was pouring the gas in the 4-wheeler. This caused an electrical arch that ignited the gas fumes causing the gas can and tank to explode in flames.
I was horrified when my husband called to tell me what had happen. I never wanted my son to have the 4-wheeler in the first place. But thats another story in itself. To think my little boy could have been burned badly by this freak occurrence.
I have been guilty of answering or talking on my cell phone at the gas pump (I know now..dumb). But just in case anyone else has done this, take note, cell phone and gas fumes are a deadly combination.
NEVER have your cell phone anywhere on your body while at the gas pump. Leave it inside your vehicle! A simple text message could ignite the gas fumes causing an explosion.
