twitter moms: the influential moms network

Hello there -

After a few years of trying to have another baby, we are pregnant!  Our daughter is 5 years old now and life has frankly become very easy:).  She actually has her first sleep over out tomorrow night and I am super excited to have the night with my husband.  I am thrilled that we are having another baby.  I am 38 years old too, so I am wondering if anyone has any "words of wisom" or insight on what it is like to have kids 6 years apart in age and/or being an "older" mom?  Thank you so much!!  Any advice to prepare myself would be great too.  Stephanie

It's not a bad situation for me. My daughter just turned 13 and my son is 6 1/2. Early on it was important to teach my daughter about being responsible (keeping the tiny toys off the carpet, latching baby gates, etc.). At this age, I have a very responsible daughter who can babysit when needed. My son has a protective big sister who is a great role model.

The only issues we have are when my daughter attempts to be a 'little mom' and when my son gets left out of my daughter's group of friends. In general, they get along very well.

Best of luck!

My son and third son were 6 years apart. When the middle one was 12 and his brother 6, he treated him as 'the kid'. Now that he is in his 40's, he wants to still treat him as 'the kid' until he realizes that 'the kid' is 35. Their older brother just smirks... For me, it was a blessing - only one in diapers with two 'little' helpers and I was much more relaxed in parenting. I was 30 and to me that was an older mom as the first one was at 20.
