Any Opinions on the HPV Vaccine for girls?

My daughter is 10 and I have planned on her getting the vaccine in the next few years. Just came across this article and it's making me think twice. Just wondering if anyone has any feelings on the subject.

There was a woman Dr. on Oprah awhile ago...can't remember her name. Anyway, Oprah asked her about the vaccination and the Dr. said that if she had a daughter that she would not be giving her the vaccination.

I had my daughter get the vaccine last year. It's a 3 shot series & she had no problem with it. She did say it felt thick going in. I think the good way out weighs the bad. If they had one for boys available I would make sure my son received it!

Check out www.NVIC.org, the National Vaccine Information Center, and do some research. I will not be having my two girls vaccinated. In my opinion, the cost/risks out weigh the purported benefits.

Since when did a vaccine cause anorexia? Seems to me that the conditions they have seen in some were probably not so much caused by the vaccine, but more likely they were pre-existing non-diagnosed conditions or symptoms of other conditions that were brought out into the open and probably for the good so they can be looked into and treated now. My 2 oldest daughters have had theirs, my next 3 will be having theirs when they are of age. The 2 oldest didn't have a single reaction past the jump they get at the initial poke.

Hi Courtney,

I haven't read the article yet, but I have asked a couple of friends of mine who are GYN's and they tell me that the vast majority of girls they see come in with this virus are those who are extremely sexually active, starting at a very young age. Also the girls are not concerned with safe sex practices. They went on to say that those girls who are not active don't come in with the virus. I have thought about this a ton myself and I have concerns with a vaccine that has only been out/followed for 10 years. I don't think they honestly know the long term effects of the vaccine. I would just die if I gave it to my daughter, only to find out later that they find out it has some sort of adverse side effects that last a lifetime. Eeekk. I'm not sure, but I don't recall 10-20 years ago this type of virus being mentioned? Then again were girls as sexually active back then? hummm :=)

I have to agree! Not enough time of valuable long term effects of the vaccine.

When it comes to our girls being sexually responsible, I think we can try and teach them to the best of our ability and to give them values that we hope they will always live by but I also think we would be naive to think our girls might not make some mistakes along the way. I have been doing a lot of reading and have learned that many people are against the vaccine because they fear it sends a message to girls that it's alright to be sexually active. I realize that this is how HPV is contracted, however, in my mind this is a cancer issue, not a sex issue. Hopefully by being connected to our kids and trying to maintain an open honest relationship, we can teach our girls to have a high value of self. Ultimately, it's up to them. I also want to point out that this is NOT just a virus that is contracted by highly sexually irresponsible girls. One of my best friends contracted this virus as an adult. She was in a long term, committed relationship and learned her lesson on not always being careful. She, like many of you out there, she has no intention of getting her kids vaccinated when the time comes.

I am still on the fence but my daughter and I have time. Keep the opinions coming!!

I had my daughter vaccinated and encouraged my two older sons fiances to do the same. I agree that the only choice one can make is an educated choice and that choice has to be theirs ALONE. Good mom doing your research.
P.S. No negative reactions on any of the girls.

It has been said that this entire thing is a hoax. I would look further into it if I were you. Here is a link to get you started:

Keep in mind, the health industry is still a business. My suggestion is to do your research.

I would not get that vaccine for my daughter. I am in the process of writing an article about the HPV vaccine. If your daughters are getting annual pap smears, the HPV virus will be detected and cervical cancer will be prevented. The key is proper vaginal, oral and (hopefully not ) anal. I don't know have Farrah got anal cancer, but I do know that HPV is one of the growing causes of anal cancer.
