I love to cook, so I'm focusing on food as part of my "green' journey. A couple of people replied that organic foods are so expensive, but I've found a few strategies to make it affordable. If there's a CSA or organic produce delivery service, order in bulk like I do. Urban Organic in New York is great. $35 dollars for a big box of produce a week! Cooking whole foods and eating less meat is healthier, greener, AND cheaper. I also try to buy grains and beans in bulk and order milk from a local dairy, all of that saves money and time shopping. At my farmers market I get some great deals too and it's a much more pleasurable shopping experience than the grocery store. Check out my blog for more green eating tips www.veerahiranandani.weebly.com/blog-beyond-mac--cheese.html.

Tracey, what's all this about saving money on household products? Can you post it on here? What is your company name and what types of products are you referring to? I also went to greenmindedteam site too. There are no specific products on there and it tells you to request more info? Do you have a lot of people who are interested in your products without being able to view them on your site or read any company history/background info, etc??

I have been working with D & B Brite Lites who specialize in green light bulbs and providing school districts with "green friendly" lighting alternatives.

Recently our community has changed the recycling pick up and containers. This change has motivated me to recycle more items, which has made me much more conscience on things I purchase regarding packing and if they can be recycled!

I also believe that many people have been "green" and didn't realize it. How long have you been recycling for instance? How can I go more green? Being resourceful with what I have already. Do I really need that brand new item? Our society, myself included are guilty of having too much stuff! If we consumed less our landfills wouldn't be choked up full of junk! Less is best!

We are all more aware about the importance of reading labels on our foods--and I encourage everyone to read the labels on other products (including cleaners) that you bring into your home. However, not all the information you may want to see is included in the label. A great resource site is http://householdproducts.nlm.nih.gov/index.htm which is a directory of household products on the market. You can learn about what's in the products, their potential health effects and how to properly use them.
Like Meredith, I use Shaklee's Get Clean line. I started using them 11 years ago and liked all their products so much I became a distributor. They are extremely economical and they work great! You can learn more about them on my website.

I guess I've been "going green" since I was little actually. My parents started us recycling at a young age - before it was the norm (in the early 70s) and we have always tried to conserve energy etc. As I have been raising my own family, I am trying to teach our children how important the environment is. Yes, I admit we have a minivan - but we sort of offset that by using our Prius most of the time. We are big recyclers and reusers - from household objects and containers, even to clothes by shopping at second hand stores and giving/receiving hand-me-downs. Last year when we got a Wii for our kids for Christmas, we even bought that second hand of Craigs List! All of this is easy to do and makes a big difference. Not only do you save money, but you also don't add to the production of junk. We do have a long way to go, for sure, but I figure every little bit helps.

I am so passionate about reducing chemicals in our lives that I also started my own skin care company, Garden Girl. We have a great selection of skin care, bath and body and baby products that are all free of parabens, sulfates, petroleum products and phthalates. And they are fragranced with essential oils - not chemical perfumes. I invite you to check it out at www.gardengirlskincare.com.

I also try to use cleaning products with minimal chemicals. I admit that I still keep bleach around - I haven't been able to totally give that up. But I only use it when necessary. Otherwise, I literally clean with vinegar and water most of the time. I also like the cleaning products at Trader Joe's. And I use Borax, Bon Ami and/or baking soda when I need to scrub. Borax is great for cleaning toilets! (although it is natural, it can still be harmful if ingested so keep it away from little ones). I have also found that the Green Works line of products is pretty good.

Lastly, I have given up fabric softeners and chemical laundry detergents. I use either Trader Joe's laundry detergent or the new natural one from Costco. Both work very well - esp. in our front loading washing machine that needs low suds. And for fabric softener, I have found that white vinegar in the fabric softener dispenser works really well! And I use those dryer spikey ball things in the dryer. The combination works surprisingly well!

So that's my family's eco-attempts in a nutshell. I love reading everyone's ideas - it has given me some new things to try!

I like using Dr. Bronner's Pure Castille Soap. It works on everything! Trader Joe's has their own brand of it too.
