Did anyone have to go back to work not long after having a baby?

Has anyone had to leave their baby in childcare or with a friend and go back to work in the first couple of months after giving birth? Was it hard? How did you cope?

I am putting together a book about parenting newborns and I would really love to include some real mom experiences of going back to work.

I did... when my son (who is now 12) was first born. I actually went back about 2 weeks after he was born because I needed money! It was not easy either because he was colicky and I was cleaning hotel rooms!

I'm about to... my son is almost 7 weeks old and I'm working from my laptop now and will start going in to the office in less than 2 weeks. I am just getting to know him and watching his personality emerge, it feels horrible to be away from him and especially to leave him in the care of someone I don't know very well. But I have no choice as I am the breadwinner as well as the breeder in my family.

Michelle! Oh how it hurts my ears when I hear about moms having to take their babies to childcare! That is why I got into business working from home years ago. The horror stories I had and continue to hear about childcare and the long term negative effects it has on kids just breaks my heart! I do hope you encourage moms to find a way to stay home, even if it means not having the big house, fancy cars and toys or even giving up something you love. Your kids should be your world. You only have one chance to raise and experience them. I try my hardest to help moms and dads make this dream happen.

Have a great week!!

Wow, that must have been tough - emotionally, physically, mentally.

Kathy, it's not a question of maintaining a certain lifestyle, it's a question of eating or not. We are a single income family - mine. It would hardly be the best thing for my son to be homeless just to have me not go to work! Please try not to judge - each parent has to make the best decisions for her own situation.

I just changed jobs so I could work less hours for the same amount of money and benefits, but it requires leaving the house a few days a week. Also, I found an amazing babysitter who is getting a Master's degree in social work and who has worked for an agency doing perinatal home visits. And my husband does childcare for a couple of hours on most days (I wish it was more, but it's out of my control). So my son will be in extremely good hands while I am earning money to keep a roof over our heads.
