Disability Awareness: Are We There Yet?

March is Disability Awareness Month. How do you talk to your kids about understanding differences? Tell us your tips for talking to kids about differences and promoting inclusion, thinking broadly about any form of special needs a child may have such as a physical disability, autism or any other kind of developmental disability.

How it Works:
To participate, simply write a post on your blog about how you talk to your kids about disability and the importance of inclusion. The only requirement we ask is that your post includes at least one link to http://www.cvscaremarkallkidscan.com/ so your readers can learn more about the great programs CVS Caremark All Kids Can is supporting to make life easier for kids with disabilities. Then return to this discussion page, post a comment below summarizing your blog post, and include an active link to your qualifying blog entry. That’s it! Deadline to enter is Wednesday, March 25th at 11:59 p.m. EST.

Twitter Moms Prizes and Awards:
o First 15 mom bloggers to post about talking to your child about disability and the importance of inclusion and include a link to http://www.cvscaremarkallkidscan.com/ will receive a $20 Amazon gift card.

o The blogger who generates the most comments will receive a $100 Amazon gift card.

In addition, 5 bloggers selected by CVS Caremark will get to choose a nonprofit serving children with disabilities to receive a $1,000 grant from CVS Caremark All Kids Can.

Total Prize Value: $400

Final winners of the gift cards will be announced on Friday, March 27th!

Hi there! This is a topic in our household and we were aware that March was disability awareness month...our pre-school and kindergarten have existing programs to educate the kids on topics such as Muscular Dystrophy and Autism. I am very happy about that as inclusion is soooo important to every child's self-confidence.

I created a post on my blog at http://is.gd/mwxR. Please visit and comment.
thanks!

Thank you Megan and CVS for this opportunity.

My blog post is here:http://holistic-show.com/blog/how-do-you-talk-to-your-kids-about-di...

In my post I have researched and provided the ways in which families can teach their children about how to include disabled people in their lives. By fostering understanding, empathy and compassion we teach our children not only what disability is and means but also how to become better people as well.

I would love to get feedback from you all, Thank you! @AndreaTannouri the @HolisticMamma

I blogged about how important it is for me to teach my daughter about acceptance. It's fun to have friends, and being friends with all people, regardless of disabilities, race, religion, is a great benefit!

I also hope to help educate her as she gets older by learning about the disabilities some of her classmates might have. I think this will help her develop her compassion and understanding.

My post on inclusion is up. In this case, it is a somewhat "invisible" disablity that I discuss:

I am thrilled to hear of this program! I have a number of connections to special needs kids and their families. I also have a story close to my heart about my big hearted child that learned early in life how to accept and include them in his life. The other three are just as generous and accepting, they just don't have as dramatic a story.

I put our story on my twittermom blog. and my regular blog http://www.thoughts.com/index.php?_action=blog_view&id=247431&type=1

As the mother of a 15 year old boy who is a heart and stroke patient, and has multiple disabilities that he is dealing with, and as the mother of a 2 year old who has mild disabilities due to tactile defensiveness, this is SUCH an important topic, and is near and dear to my heart.

I have written my post. You can read it here:
"Why My Heart Breaks at Times"

Thank you for doing this!

Ok, it's been blogged. :) I think you have the 15, but I'm a special education teacher and I really didn't care if there was a giftcard or freebie or not, this was too important of a topic to miss out on sharing. Parents of normal children have no idea the difference nor the impact they can make in other children's lives by their child having compassion for others who are different than they are.
