Disability Awareness: Are We There Yet?

March is Disability Awareness Month. How do you talk to your kids about understanding differences? Tell us your tips for talking to kids about differences and promoting inclusion, thinking broadly about any form of special needs a child may have such as a physical disability, autism or any other kind of developmental disability.

How it Works:
To participate, simply write a post on your blog about how you talk to your kids about disability and the importance of inclusion. The only requirement we ask is that your post includes at least one link to http://www.cvscaremarkallkidscan.com/ so your readers can learn more about the great programs CVS Caremark All Kids Can is supporting to make life easier for kids with disabilities. Then return to this discussion page, post a comment below summarizing your blog post, and include an active link to your qualifying blog entry. That’s it! Deadline to enter is Wednesday, March 25th at 11:59 p.m. EST.

Twitter Moms Prizes and Awards:
o First 15 mom bloggers to post about talking to your child about disability and the importance of inclusion and include a link to http://www.cvscaremarkallkidscan.com/ will receive a $20 Amazon gift card.

o The blogger who generates the most comments will receive a $100 Amazon gift card.

In addition, 5 bloggers selected by CVS Caremark will get to choose a nonprofit serving children with disabilities to receive a $1,000 grant from CVS Caremark All Kids Can.

Total Prize Value: $400

Final winners of the gift cards will be announced on Friday, March 27th!

I called the piece "What I Told My Children". Its about how I explained my youngest son's disability to his siblings. Then passing on what I learned to my sons' teachers

What an awesome opportunity. I love that this program is focused on children with disabilities and including them in learning and play. I can not think of anything more rewarding to write about.

I tweeted and made a post on my blog here Specialneedskidstalkradio

I have a child with special needs and disability, so this is simply a way of life for us. You can read more at the blog link above.

Hey
What a great initiative, I've blogged and think this is a great way to get the word out.

Talking to kids about disability is important but as well, we all can do things to make the world more inclusive for children - whether we start at home with our own children, help others locally or work on the international stage. Everything helps to make lives for children with disability more inclusive so they can grow up to be liked, respected and valued for their skills.

I have a great book that explains autism to children. I bought it from www.essentialautism.com

It worked great for other kids understanding my son :)

What a fantastic idea. I have written Part One of my post. I'll post Part Two tomorrow. Since my little guy is Autistic, it isn't him I have to talk to about disabilities, it is other children who meet him. Part One is the background information about our situation, and in Part Two I'll talk about how we work with other children to encourage them to include him in their play and activities.

I have been told time and time again to talk about our trials and tribulations with the school system and their lack of willingness to help disabled children. I started my diary on it, and now I can talk about this company and how they are willing to acknowledge disabled families.
