Evites: Tacky Or Smart?

  • Rating: 5 after 2 votes
I just received another Evite in my email box today, and to be honest I’m not sure I really like them.

I realize we live in a day and age of the electronic communication, but I think it’s gotten ridiculous! We all text, IM, Facebook, email, etc. and none of it is verbally or face to face (which is pretty funny that the name is “FACEbook”)and it certainly isn’t by “snail mail” much.

And THIS is where the Evite comes in. I don’t know of anyone who hasn’t received one yet (except maybe my mom and dad), but basically they are invitations for parties celebrating anything from birthdays and holidays to anniversaries. You go to the “evite” link that is sent to your email (taking you to the evite site and to the specific event) and you click on the r.s.v.p. that usually says something like “attending”, “not-attending” or “maybe”. (Could you just IMAGINE putting a “maybe” on a written invitation?)

To me, the only real “pro” here for Evites is to help the environment by saving some trees. And in all honesty, isn’t it just as bad for the environment all the computer usage? Just a thought.

Personally, I don’t much care for evites. I know they’re convenient for the person sending them, and sure, it makes it much quicker to RSVP (that’s hoping it doesn’t end up in your spam!). But I just think it’s the easy way out and is a bit tacky, really. Unless you’re on a tight budget, then I understand. Invitations can be expensive. But Walgreens and Rite-Aid have some pretty, inexpensive and impressive invites, and if you’re throwing a party, I believe invitations are something that should be put into the budget.

Let’s face it! Invitations set the beginning mood for the party! And do you really want to set your mood with a generic evite?

The only party I think an evite might, MIGHT, work for would be a child’s birthday party. Only because unless it’s a big birthday, like the first, or the 16th, then it can be treated as a more fun, light-hearted event, so I do believe that an evite might work in that circumstance.

But all in all, I’m not a fan of the Evite. But that doesn’t mean I don’t want you to stop inviting me to your parties! LOL!

Thoughts?

I'm part of a Women's Professional Network Connection organization here in my area and they use Evites to remind us about the monthly luncheon. In that particular case I find it helpful... but then I get evites from spammers too, inviting me to join their online 'product' buying event.... getting an evite from a stranger who scavenged my email address - That annoys me!!!!!

That would annoy me too Jennifer! I do like evites for certain things. I use them mostly for informal gatherings but send out invitations for birthday parties and formal events. I do like the green aspect of an evite and they save a lot of time, which I never seem to have an excess of!!!

I agree that there is nothing better then getting "good" mail and how exciting when it's an invitation to a party. Nowadays the only thing I get in the mail are bills and junk mail.

However, there are some great companies like Pingg and BestPartyEver.vom, and Purpletrail.com that let you plan and manage your party through the electronic invitation. This is useful and lets guests communicate between themselves and with you easily before the party. In addition, you can manage shopping lists, menus and to do lists. There are also great companies like RedStamp.com that will create, address and mail your invitations for you!

I would not use electronic invites for a wedding, but for most other events I think it is fine and makes sense.

I love evites. Makes so much more sense to me. easier for me as the inviter and as the invitee. You can see who else is going and ask questions. I hate regular invites. Why pay for postage as well? seems like a waste of money when we all need to be saving?! I would only do paper invites for weddings and things like that

I think they are tacky... but I use them! Although I have opposite thinking on the kids party issue. That's one place I do NOT use them, as my kids like to have a part in filling out their invites. And not for showers, wedding, etc... But for informal parties, sure, save some paper.

Thanks Dawn for these great websites! I DO love the idea of an "Electronic Party Planner"!

I kinda like the idea of Evites. In my home no matter how hard I try not to {the invitation gets misplaced somewhere only to be found after the event}

I agree with what you wrote.... I think it is just a matter of convenience.... people move and lose addresses but you almost always keep the same email.... just seems like it fits in with out instant gratification- lifestyle in America. Whatever is easiest and can be done in the quickest amount of time... Invitations could become a lost art! :-(

I love evites for some things. For example, for my husband's 40th b-day. It saved my bacon. And, for events I have in town where I am inviting large groups. Especially, if I have events that require payment, they rock. But, for the average kid's birthday party... no thanks. I absolutely agree with you that while we may be in the electronic age, some things are still so much better handwritten. I also am of that opinion when it comes to thank-you cards, letters of meaning, etc. It shows you took the time to care.

Great post!

I think you need to know your guests and perhaps do a combination of paper and e-vites. I am the type of guest who checks her mailbox once a week and checks her email box once an hour. E-vites make sense to me but to someone like my mother, who is the complete opposite, they don't seem effective. I have only used e-vites once, last year for my son's birthday and it worked pretty well. I would not use e-thank you cards though. If someone took the time to buy a gift and attend my party, the least I can do is send out a paper thank you.

I actually love evites. What annoys me the most is that in this day and age people either don't rsvp, or they rsvp yes and don't show up. Manners have gone out the window, and it is annoying. I think as a hostess of any kind of party it is hard to plan a party without knowing how many will attend. With evite, it allows you to update your rsvp if your situation changes, and it also allows you to add something to bring, where everyone can see it and adjust what they will bring to the party accordingly. I love evites, and quite often I personalize them with my own images anyway. Best of all it is FREE, no cards to buy, no postage, and no waiting for them to get to your guests. On top of that if you make a mistake, you can correct it and sent out an update. That is something you just can't do with a printed invite. Once you commit it to paper you are stuck with it.

I also use evite for my business, to invite the members to our business meetings and such. You can cover just about any occasion or gathering with evite, not just parties.

I find evite to be a great solution for today's busy families!

I really like evites, I always misplace things (thats a whole other story) and invitation cards end up getting lost. With evites I dont have to worry about it because I can just log in and look at the invitation. One less thing to keep track of.
