Former working mom, suddenly a SAHM - got any tips?

  • Rating: 5 after 3 votes
I am no longer working as of a week ago and I am going to take some time off and enjoy some summer time with my two girls 5 and 2. I have always worked so it is strange right now getting used to being home and dealing with an unfortunate departure after almost 8 years at the company. Anyone have any tips? I have researched free and cheap activities in the area (Atlanta) and blogged about it and I have two SAHM pals that I have reached out to. I am planning on making my own schedule - nothing too busy but some sort of structure. Any advice is welcome!

Hi -- Embrace change as a positive force - the blessing is that your children are going to love spending time with you whether you are just hanging out at home and in the yard or doing activities together. Some great resources online that I have used for finding "things to do" are www.gocitykids.com (it might have a different name now but the link will still work) and you click on your city and then look for the calendar button and it will list everything from story times, to local festivals to free activities for you and the kids to do together as a family. It's also great for finding resources locally by category. I also think that spending time taking pictures together if you haven't done many impromptu photo shoots with the kids is a fun and then they can enjoy watching the photo slide show or video on the computer and be able to look back at the pics when they are older. Finding other moms through www.meetup.com or other community websites in your area is also a good way to get connected -- or just go to a local park and say hello to others with children your same age and introduce yourself to get involved with local moms.

Enjoy the summer,

Hi Jenni,
I work with Educational Equity Center, an educational non-profit that develops programs and curricula to promote bias-free learning. One of our current programs, funded by the National Science Foundation, is Science: It's a Girl Thing! We're specifically targeting girls in this program because women are greatly underrepresented in the fields of science and math, which is partly due to the fact our schools and culture often have a bias against encouraging girls in these subjects.

The goal is to help girls build an interest in science and a confidence in mastering it. The program consists of free, downloadable pdf activity cards of simple and fun science experiments that you can do with your daughters. These activities would be a great way to spend time with your daughters- they are educational, fun, and use materials that you can find lying around the house. We can find these activity cards on our Facebook page at http://facebook.dj/scienceitsagirlthing, and we also Tweet about it at: www.twitter.com/girlsforscience. .

Best,
