How did you find and choose your child's doctor?

How did you find and choose a doctor for your newborn? Did you look when you were pregnant or did you wait until your baby was born. What is best do you think? a pediatrician, family doctor, nurse practitioner.

well when i had my daughter i didn't plan ahead so i got stuck with a pediatrician i couldn't stand but right now i'm in the process of looking for a new one. I'm thinking just a family doctor so i don't have to worry about everyone in the family going to different doctors. I guess just call around for a consulation with someone in your area just to see if you like them and the way they do things.

Definitely choose a pediatrician when you are pregnant. Ask your OBGYN to suggest someone. Call the Children's Hospital and ask for recommendations as well. Network with others who have small children and get their opinion. You will be relying on a pediatrician for 18 years so do your research. Good Luck!

I talked to friends who had young children and my OBGYN. What I found was that there was a surprising consistency in their opinion on the best pediatric practice in town. I called and visited the practice while I was pregnant. They were very open to the visit, and when I said I was a new parent wanting to find out about their practice, they treated me like gold -- even though they were busy.

As far as I'm concerned, that was the first test of how they would treat me and my child after he was born. An assistant even took me on a tour of the practice and I was able to briefly meet the doctors.

If you're interested in touring a practice, you might want to call and ask what time of day is best to 'drop in'. They might be willing to send you an information packet, too. Often, you can go online and check doctor's educational background, length of practice, and specialties. But, in my opinion, there is nothing like going and seeing for yourself.

Trust your instincts, and you'll make the right choice.

I asked my OBGYN for a recommendation. I was very lucky because we really clicked with our pediatrician. I would definitely get recommendations from your doctor or friends while your are pregnant because you will need to give the hospital your pediatrician's name when you check in. The peds first visit will be with you in the hospital!
