How did your husband propose to you?

  • Rating: 4.9 after 8 votes
This topic came to mind because my husband proposed to me in the monh of December. We enjoyed a romantic dinner and then he told me he had planned for a horse-drawn carriage ride through our favorite downtown area. As we approached a beautiful white horse and carriage, he knelt down on one knee and proposed. I couldn't believe it!

Your turn.

When DH and I got together, he was very particular about his house (the house we would live in if we got married). He didn't seem to trust my decorating style and wasn't willing to face change... of decoration.

We were getting ready to start putting in the yard (he had built the house the previous fall) and he took me to the back yard and we were talking about what we were going to put what, where the waterfall would be, etc. He then took me inside and asked me what I was thinking of doing to the bedroom, the master bath then our living room. After we were done talking about it he gave me a small speech and he mentioned that he was giving me his house to share and I could decorate it in any way that made me happy... as long as I would marry him.

Of course, I did!

These stories are all great. Mine happened when we were visiting our parents in Florida. We were living in Atlanta and mine were in Leesburg, FL and his mom and step dad are in Auburndale, FL. We had dinner at my parents' house and in addition to parents, we had two sets of aunts and uncles there. Alex and I made BBQ ribs for dinner and I had just finished scraping the rub and sauce out from underneath my fingernails when Alex asked me to join him in the back yard. Out I went and as he got down on one knee, he opened a gray box and a sparkly thing went flying. It bounced on the cement twice and ended up in the grass. Once the ring was retrieved, he asked me to marry him. Apparently the ring fell because he'd been so nervous about asking my dad for permission moments before. He wanted to propose before my dad could change his mind. Of course I said yes and we went back in to tell everyone. It was so nice and special to be there with so many family members. We were married six months later and we celebrated our sixth wedding anniversary in September.

I'm still waiting!
Actually, Hubby made an attempt (although lame) 2 .5 years into our relationship. We were at his parents house and he had actually gotten me a computer for Christmas. On Christmas Eve, he was having second thoughts about the computer and was calling all over to see if there were any jewelry stores open (I found this out the next day) but there were not. On Christmas Day he gave this whole speach about how much he loved me, wanted to spend the rest of his life with me, and "if I wanted" I could exchange the computer for an engagement ring. WTF? I politely explained that if a computer was what he wanted me to have, then I would keep that.
2.5 years later, on an overcast, hot as haites Wednesday in July, we were sitting in our apartment. He had just come back from running some errands. Both of us were on Vacation from our jobs and we were trying to figure out how to spend the rest of the day. I was watching some relationship drama on TV and made some comment about "knowing what it's like to be with someone who's afraid to commit" he asked what I was referring to. I explained that the following day would be 5 years since our first date. He took the phone and went to another room. He emerged 10 minutes later and told me to change my clothes. I asked where we were going. He said "It's 2:00 now and we have a 4:00 appt with the Justice of the Peace, we still need to get a marriage liscense, so put on what ever you would like to get married in and make it fast."

We've been married 9 years and hopefully I can get a proper proposal for our 10th.

All these proposals are so romantic!! My husband & I had been dating for 5 years by the time he asked me to marry him. Well, we were 18 yrs old when we met, so waiting was probably a good thing... He took me on a trip to Reno (we like to gamble!) for the weekend and when we were out at dinner one night he just said - I want to marry you, let's get married. He didn't have a ring because he wanted me to pick out the one I wanted exactly. I was all set to just go to a Chapel and do it but he reminded me that our families would be so mad if we didn't have a wedding! We planned it for the next year and have been married now for 13 years now with two beautiful daughters!

My husband proposed December 1st, 2006. He told me he was taking me away for the weekend and to pack my suitcase. He drove me to a luxury resort (my first time anywhere like that) and took me up to our suite with a fireplace and view of the lake. As I walked into the room I saw candles, rose petals and pictures of us all of the room. In the corner was a dozen roses. He got down on one knee and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him. He somehow picked out my dream ring (I have no idea how since he didn't talk to anyone). I was crying of course...it was so wonderful!

I wrote "YES" on a piece of cardstock paper and wrapped it up in a box with beautiful wrapping and a big bow and stuck it under the Christmas tree. When he opened it he couldn't figure it out for a moment and then he kissed me!

K here's one for a laugh... sorry no romance here really... we had been dating for 5 years and one night my hubby asked me to pick a place, any place to have dinner that night... it was a Thursday... so I figured, well lets go to Kelsey's (a neighbourhood restaurant somewhat less than a Red Lobster, but better than a Denny's) because it was cheap and fast. He said to me "are you sure?" and I was like "yea I want some dip." lol
so before dinner he says to me, "you know how we are going to get married one day right?" and I said "yes" and he's like "well I bought you a ring" and he pulled out a little box. and of course by now I was like awwwwwwww it's beautiful!! and he's like, well those ladies are looking at us, please dont make a scene... hahaha! oh how I love him...

Sounds so romantic Angela!
Well...my husband proposed to me too in the month of December. He had planned a get-a-way trip to Oahu..rented a car and stayed in one of the beautiful Hilton hotels in Waikiki (we live on Maui). The whole trip was supposed to be a shopping trip for me...but it turned out to be a PROPOSAL TRIP. We went out to Roy's and had a lovely dinner with Pineapple martinis..we strolled the Beach Front and than headed back to the room. All the time we were strolling HE HAD THE RING IN HIS PANTS POCKET. We got back to the room (now we had a corner suite with 2 full size bedroom..it was beautiful) I put on my pajama's and kind of kicked back on the couch...while my hubby was doing his own thing in the other room...within a minute I think I feel asleep...than next thing I knew there he was on his knee with a ring in his hand asking me to marry him...I was like OMG! of all place and of all the outfits I had to be in PJ's...but he thought it was than the right time to propose. We got married this past May and planning our 1st anniversary trip to Surrey BC Canada:)

Share your story with us!!!

My husband was stationed in Japan... we're HS Sweethearts so we were having a long (LONG) distance relationdship. He came to visit from Japan one time and took me out to dinner. He was so nervous... poor guy! So nervous he pretty much threw the ring at me and yelled out, "Will you marry me?" LOL! It wasn't as romantic as I wished it would be BUT... I like to think that we were just too young (20) and he was just EXTREMELY nervous.

Of course, I said yes and married him 8 months later and a few months later flew to Japan to spend the rest of my life with him...

Ummm...obviously we're still not in Japan. After 3 years he got orders to come back to the states and then we lived happily ever after.... haha

Sadly.. my hubby never really proposed.. it was like.. maybe we should get married and he and I both said ok then a few months later we were married. Sometimes he'll do that "Baby I love you will you marry me stuff" but it's mostly to get me to laugh and smile.. I wish I had a super romantic thing to say but in my family.. I'm the poem person not my guy :)

We are scuba divers and usually go diving with two of our other good friends, one of whom was a Coast Guard diver. My husband had our friend get off the boat first (we were last at the instruction of our dive masters who were also in on it) and he put a treasure box on the ocean floor. We were 90 ft down and came across this cool little box (I'm still oblivious at this point). The guys opened it and inside was my ring box surrounded by other decorative stones (just like a treasure). My husband put a laminated card in that said "Kristy, you are the treasure in my world, marry me." Our other friend had an underwater camera ("just to try out") and got great pictures of the whole things. It was awesome. I love this story. Thanks so much for asking. We have been having serious problems as a couple lately and telling this story was just what I needed.
