How Would You Create Change In Your Community? Input Needed!

  • Rating: No Rating
Ok mamas, your input is needed! How would you organize for social and environmental change?

A group of young professionals (myself included) are forming a partnership network of industry leaders and community members to foster local sustainability through cross-collaboration, innovation and resource pooling. We hope to see businesses and community members connect, brainstorm and share through this open forum. Our inaugural meeting will be in March and we're currently looking for input on how best we can work to bridge the gap between local 'Thought Leaders' and community members while promoting collaboration between the various business sectors (education, technology & innovation, retail etc.) in the Green market.

As influential community members, business owners and 'movers and shakers', we would like to ask you: How can we create value for all participants and encourage long-term membership for meaningful change?

In my community, we are in great need of programs for the children here, so that we can better our drop out issues, most of the teens I see here are becoming mothers at a very early age and it bothers me that we as adults are not protecting these children from bad decisions, bad homes, and bad self-esteem issues. The programs I am interested in starting will result in learning self love and appreciation, making better decisions in their lives with the proper support. Mentoring and motivational classes, field trips to prisons, mental health hospitals, and I would love to do a teen swap program which would allow young girls to trade places with a teen mother for 2 days and experience what life would be like if they had a child/childen, they would be supervised the entire time, but they would have to do all the mothering work themselves. If this does not make them have a new look on life, then I don't know what would. I have a very small business that I am interested in starting to help with all these issues, but I am not financially able to do this all alone, I am looking for investors to assist in programs of this magnitude, or if someone could lead me in the right directions of contacts, that would be greatly appreciated too. Please help me to help others, are you not tired of your tax money going to waste, I am! We are paying for these girls and boys to raise children that they made, and for prisoners to stay housed, when we can step in and help save these children from doing these things that will harm us all.....Bless you in advanced.......Here is my webpage, please look at it and it will explain a little more........http://groups.msn.com/PLATINUMPROMOTIONS

Platinum Productions,

Contacting your local Small Business Development Center might be a good starting place.

Your cause sounds noble so perhaps you could begin by mobilizing community members via social networks like meetup.com, a ning group, yahoo group etc. Catalyzing action through local networks is free and may assist you in gaining proof of concept-something an investor would likely want.

Good luck!

We did a similar thing when we started Green Halloween (www.GreenHalloween.org). The idea was to involve parents, businesses, government, teachers, physicians, and concerned citizens in taking steps to make Halloween (and ultimately all holidays) better for kids and the planet.

I think what made us successful from the start was the fact that we were very narrowly focused on what really at the time was virgin territory. We presented very clear ideas about what each constituency could do to help move things forward.

I'd like to see your clarify the idea of "fostering sustainability through cross-collaboration." This is a great idea in theory, but it might be too general to incite people to become a part of it. People are incredibly busy. WHY should they join up? How will it benefit them directly and/or benefit the community. People want to do the right thing, but they need to be led, a lot more than they believe. You've got to set them on fire with your concept and then keep the fire lit under them.

I'd probably meet with a few key individuals, no more than six and brainstorm, then hash all this out before you even begin trying to recruit people.

I look forward to hearing more about how this goes.

Warmly,
Lynn
