As a 10-year survivor of cervical cancer, I find that many parent's are inadequately informed about Gardasil and merely glom on to the negative media portrayals, rather than doing there own home work. People seem to fail to notice that more than 95 percent of all adverse reactions reported with Gardasil pertain to fainting, dizziness and pain at the injection site...not death or paralysis. Those types of reactions have not been proven to be linked directly to Gardasil, but may very well be linked to underlying conditions exaserbated by the vaccine. It isn't simply a sexually transmitted infection that goes away. HPV is a disease that stays with your for the rest of your life. The missnomer out there is that 2/3 of all people who get HPV "clear" the infection on their own. When in fact, you NEVER clear HPV. It can go dormant in your system, but is never truly gone. When you get stressed, pregnant or hit menopause, it suddenly reactivates and can kill you. HPV causes cervical, vaginal, anal, penile, head, neck, throat, lung and other forms of cancer - learn more.

maybe so; none the less my oldest daughter did have a reaction on the day of the shot. she had an enormous amount of swelling in her groin area [only on one half of it] very scary, very strange, very swollen. And following that she had a nodular thing & discharge that the ob was watching. It happened within about 1 hr of having the injection; I called her doctor back and the doctors nurse said no way it could be from the vaccine, but that is total BS. it definately was from the vaccine. She went ahead and the second in the series, had the swelling AGAIN in the groin area. She is not having the 3rd and my youngest will not be having them at all. IMO there is not enough information known about this new drug [not enough history].

I do believe that we should do everything we can to help prevent cancer and the viruses that cause it, however, I am hesitant when it comes to the Gardasil vaccine. My father has a PhD in chemical engineering and he tells me that not enough long-term research has been done to determine whether this vaccine is safe/effective or not. I just want to warn people and make sure that you are making your own sound judgements and decisions on personal health issues for you and your family and request that you do your research before making any type of decision especially when it involves your children. His opinion is enough for me right now - before I give my girls these shots, I will wait until substantial research is available to prove/disprove the validity of the vaccine.

Definitely learn more, because getting Gardasil when you're already infected with HPV actually INCREASES your risk of developing cervical cancer, and getting yearly Paps and treatment when indicated is more effective at preventing cervical cancer than Gardasil alone.

If any parent feels they've been blown off by their healthcare provider about possible reactions to Gardasil or any other vaccine, you have the right to go to VAERS (Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, the same database the doctors use to report reactions) and filing a report yourself. It's estimated by the CDC that only 10% of vaccine reactions get reported, but if parents knew their rights that number just might climb.

I am not one to object to vaccines. My 3 girls have all of them that are required, but for some reason, I am not convinced that we are ready for Gardisil. Even though a lot of my 12 year old daughter's friend's moms that I've talked to have given it to their daughters, I have not yet. The pediatrician has really been pushing for it every time we go in, and I keep telling them that I'm still thinking about it. We have time, right?

Ladies,
Vaccines mayor may not have side effects. They may or may not be similar in all cases. However, the fact remains, that Cervical cancer is something we have to worry about. We all know the popular adage that prevention is better than cure. In so doing, I think it is important that we as moms, sisters, daughters and women should not forego the regular pap test just because there is a vaccine available to prevent a disease. I know a lot of women find the pap test no comfortable, but there now is something that helps in making a pap test more accurate and comfortable by collecting cervical cells on a small balloon. One thing I do want to say is that I am now way an advocate for getting Gardasil, however, I am an HPV and cervical cancer advocate and national spokesperson for an organization for women with these conditions. My thing is that too many parent's bury their heads in the sand when it comes to discussing sex (or talk around it), even with their 11, 12 or 13 year old daughters (and sons). Parent's like to assume they will know when their child starts having sexual contact, even if it is just a first kiss. That just isn't the case. Many times, kids have experimented at least 1-2 years earlier than the parent's are aware of. I just want to encourage and open and healthy dialogue between parents and their children giving all the facts. We need to discuss that there are STDs out there and HIV, and that some of these can lead to life-long conditions, just as HPV does. I have counseled numerous women now in their 30s and 40s who are shocked and appalled that they have HPV that has lead to precancer or cancer. It can be dormant for that long. You get it in your teens and don't deal with the devastating side effects until your 20s or 30s or beyond, when you can get your first HPV test. HPV do

My girls will not be vaccinated with Gardasil. With over 10,000 adverse reactions including paralysis, brain inflammation, etc. and 27 deaths from Gardasil, and this is only short-term data, because NO long term studies are available because it wasn't thoroughly tested.

It's worth a listen to this interview if you're looking for an alternate medical opinion that is not affected by dollars. Dr Christiane Northrup talks about HVP vaccine here:

She talks about other (safer) ways to help promote reproductive health with our kids.

Dr. Christine Northrup name breaks shear dread and hatred to any cervical cancer survivor, as she has done a HUGE disservice to women who have or have batteled persistent HPV and cervical cancer and is known by the top leading gynecologists and doctor's who work to find cures for HPV (not vaccine types) as a what we lovingly refer to as NOT a reliable source for information related to or about HPV and cervical cancer. She was on Oprah and sparked a huge controvery with her uninformed opnion on the origins of HPV and the link to HPV-related cancers. She is good at many other things, but has never study, treated or been known as an expert in the field of gynecological cancers, especially those that pertain to HPV. While it is your choice not to vaccinate your daughter, I certainly hope you will discuss that condoms are not a viable choice if she does decide to have sex, as they do not protect against the transmission of HPV. Plus, even if she waits until marriage, you will never know if her partner did, and if they didn't, there is a chance she can become infected and have complications during chilbearing or menopausal years of life. So pleaee, educate her well and share an open and loving discussion with her, cause it could save her life eventually.

Patti, I agree it can cause all of these things. However, if you get your annual exams, it will be detected. I think everyone should look at the statistics of HPV related deaths and draw their conclusions from there. I love Dr. Sears' book on vaccines because he does just that. When you look at the statistics, the risk of getting the diseases are not that great, especially when you compare it to the risks of some vaccines. I think young girls should not get this vaccine because it only covers a few number of the strands and there are hundreds that are not protected by the vaccine. I think women would better serve their children on strong sex education talks and the importance of a good diet. Eating properly and having optimum vitamin D levels are a great way to naturally control many viral infections. I think vaccines ultimately lead to many of the autom immune diseases that we are suddenly bombarded with (that never existed before). The vaccines can be very toxic on the body as well.

Wow, Single Rose, you have had quite an ordeal. Personally, I believe in vaccinating our kids. If one of my boys had went through something like that, I don't think I would have them get the third one either. Scary stuff!

Hi Everyone---my daughter was 17 when she got the shot...she did a reserach paper on Gardasil at school & then came home & ask me for a GYN appt. to get the shot...I first ask her if "she was a virgin" that this is critical. She said yes. So I made the appt, she got the shots. Everything was fine. This was a decision, we made together. She is now 20, just got married & her husband is in the Navy. We just talked about her having the shot, she is still very happy she did.
Now I have a 11 yr old Grandaughter, that I want to have the shot on her 12th Birthday. In March. Hopefully her Dad we approve. His choice, not mine. But both my dgt & I have had a talk about Gardasil to him. I do believe that everyone should research, before making the decision.

I wouldn't necessarily say that HPV gets picked up by your annual exam - I saw a few doctor's who missed it and even had a false negative just two weeks before going to another doctor who ran a more sensitive test and discovered I had cancer. And, my ordeal is not rare. There are MANY false negative results each year, and with high risk HPV, it takes roughly 5-10 years to move to towards actual cancer, so just think of how many false negative tests there are each year. The doctor runs the brush over an area of the cervix, but can easily miss a precancerous lesion very easily. Most women (more than 90 percent) have no symptoms before they find out they have HPV, there is no discharge, strange odor or pain,. In fact to many women the diagnosis comes as a surprise. Not to mention, if you go to a clinic or have minimal insurance, chances are you many only end up with a conventional Pap test, not the Thin-Prep Liquid-based Cytology testing, thus it becomes very difficult to detect at that point and is easily missed. And, if you are undere 30, you are not tested for HPV, so there is no way to know you have it until something has already gone wrong.
