Is he creative or just weird?

I was a nervous first-time mom. So when my kid didn't play with his toys the "normal" way, I worried.

Then when his preschool teacher told his dad and me at the first parent-teacher conference we ever attended that he played "interestingly," I worried even more — you mean someone else notices?

But after watching my kid for many years, I came to realize a lot about him, my own assumptions and about what's "normal," as I write about in today's OMG chronicles post.

When it comes to play, there really isn't a "right" way or a "wrong" one, but allowing your kid to do it his or her way helps fosters the "squishy" skills the Wall Street Journal “Work & Family” columnist Sue Shellenbarger says kids will need to handle the new workplace.

How do you foster creativity in your kids?

He is creative! I vote creative.
we went to the river on Monday and I brought all these toys and my kid only wanted to play with rocks and a stick he found. Literally for hours he played with the rocks and the stick.

I think its great!

I just commented to your blog. My BIL did the same thing and drove his parents crazy. Especially since the things he was taking apart were expensive. lol

He is now an engineer!

All our brains work different for different reasons. Otherwise nothing would get done would it? Some of us (hand raised) are bossy and natural coaches, others are quieter like my VA and goodness she gets a lot of stuff done for me! She also pays attention to more detail while I'm jumping to the creative, she knows that the buttons in my paypal and newslette work. I put them up and just assume they do until I get a cranky email. lol

Our society completes itself, it's whether or not we take advantage of those that complete us ;)

I also commented on your blog. Encourage the creativity and let them follow their passion. How many people have we heard about that study what their parents wanted or expected, only to end up hating it? They are either very unhappy in their profession or they never work in it! What a waste...
