Mother's little helper — pot

  • Rating: 5 after 6 votes
I feel like I'm behind the times. Evidently, minivan-driving suburban soccer moms are smoking pot to chill. Well, nobody told me; I'm still having my Lemon Drops, Cosmos and zin!

I don't want to begrudge any mom her doobie — I'm sure she earned it. But, I'm a little worried about the "crutch" factor.

What do you think?

How about smoking the pot, having a glass of wine, and THEN getting the vibrator.... or better yet, your husband :-)

.. honestly? It's idiotic! Smoking Pot is no better than smoking tobacco..and let me tell you.. cancer SUCKS!!! .. and any self respecting mom should keep that crap away from their kids.

Need to chill? Drink ONE glass of wine... Go for a walk...crank the music and dance around the living room..or heck... buy a vibrator, use it.. and take a little nap.

Agree!

I think if you need to smoke pot to relax then you have a problem. There are so many other options out there than this. And, smoking pot opens the door to many other problems. Pot smokers will debate you on this but I know plenty of people that have gone on to do more harmful drugs and I think it just makes you stupid after awhile.

A lot of people do it and more than I realize. It's kind of scary I think.

I totally agree...now that I'm a mom I don't want my boys subjected to this crap even if it's not in their sight. The whole idea of parenthood is to be a role model and what kind of message am I sending to my kids let alone myself if I need to chill with alcohol or drugs???
Yes...take up Yoga, hire a babysitter for a few hours (that's the cost of a doobie right there) take a walk, lock the door and have a quickie...or, hell, dust off that vibrator and have a great night!

Just from personal perspective - pot is not exactly the healthiest way to relax. Almost instantaneously it increases the heart rate, which can be dangerous for anyone with cardiac complications (specifically those who are unaware of the fact) and, in some people, elicits hyperventilation (related to panic attacks). It dries the mouth and throat and causes bloodshot eyes. It reduces reaction time, coordination and concentration and can, over time, permanently reduce short-term memory. In addition, research has indicated not only that some regular users of marijuana experience temporary infertility, but also that, contrary to popular belief, marijuana contains some of the same toxins that cause cancer in cigarette smokers (but in higher amounts). To boot, research has indicated that regular users tend to become psychologically dependent on marijuana because they crave that same sense of relaxation that has been mentioned so many times as a response to this post.

Marijuana is illegal, and it is unhealthy. Rather than propping ourselves up on the false sense of relaxation provided by marijuana, why not relax in a warm bath? Or, since research has indicated that regular exercise and a healthy diet can bring a fantastic sense of self, peace, calmness and accomplishment, why not try that? Or, perhaps, a good book and one glass of wine? There are so many other options that are a hundred times healthier.

This is just my take.

It's no more or less of a "crutch" than having a drink is.

Ladies,

This is a very interesting topic. I must say that as much as we may all have our own ideas/opinions about this topic we should respect each other and refrain from putting anyone down.

We all will fall short sometime in life and we would love other women to encourage us to change but in a positive way. We need to think about the factors as to why someone would want to use this as an escape to relax. Every single one of us has weaknesses and will need help along the way and if not now you will in the future.

I don't consider marijuana to be a death sentence as it is an herb that grows just like the herbs that we cook with. When it is abused, that is when it becomes a problem. I am sure that we all have sometime down the line had alcohol, RX drugs to ease our pains (which is worse than smoking herbs) at some point in our lives, so to judge another women is being hypocritical.

Let's try to be positive and respect one another in this journey in life. Our issues now a days is that we are so quick to fight with words that we lose the fact that we are all sisters in this walk together and should be a stepping stool for one another.

and one more thing.... Be careful with what the polluted system puts out there for you because if they can make RX's and alcohol legal with the side effects of blood in your urine/stool, heart attacks, vomiting, death, shortness of breath and the list goes on and on; I am sure that you watch the commercials and all the side effects associated with alcohol and RX drugs. Why would they want to legalize a natural herb?

This system is so crooked and we have fallen in their traps and have become victims and live by every word that they say without the studying and seeking out information for ourselves. The fast food that we eat is killing people left and right but are you teaching your children to stay home and eat home cooked meals everyday? Or are you taking them to Mc Donald's?

I hope you get my point and realize that no matter which way you turn you are killing someone around you but in a mild and loving way. There are so many things that we to ourselves and our families by what has been provided to us from the system that this topic is no better than the killing of RX drugs, alcohol and even fast food.

I agree, Tamara, but it's very important to remember that people come from all different "places" w/re/2 such an apparently volatile topic, now that we're Moms &: all... Perhaps what appears to be "put-downs" of Others is, in fact, the fear & distress faced by many women who've dealt with addiction, either their own or a loved one's, & their distress is understandable &, for me, to be respected. I wish you & all other TwitterMoms a lover-ly weekend & urge you to tell someone that you love them... You won't regret it! xxxoo

I'm the same kind of "prude!" I completely agree with everything you've said!

I relax in natural ways...no alcohol or smoking pot. I did that in my teenage days. I suppose I've outgrown it and prefer to relax by taking a bike ride, lying down and relaxing, changing my thoughts, listening to great music, lighting candles, etc. I don't want to put that kind of stuff in my body. Call me a prude, but I prefer to practice and teach my children healthy living.

I agree with alot of what you're saying, but the one thing that stands out and many people refuse to believe, is the fact that Marijuana IS 100% addictive!

I would love to hear from people who suffer from chronic pain or mental disorders such as Panic Attacks or General Anxiety Disorder. Is it better for physicians to prescribe something like Oxycodone, which is probably the most addictive legal drug known to the human race? Maybe some Valium or Xanax? The pharmaceutical companies are making massive amounts of money. My prescription for G.A.D. costs $110.00 a month. My sister spends about 2K a month on prescription medicine. She has had eight back operations and is in constant pain.

I’m not saying that Yoga might not possibly help, exercise and diet too. Until you or someone very close to you has suffered from somthing crippling, or felt like they were going to die from repeated panic attacks, I think it’s hard to really grasp the big picture. No one really knows the total benefits or side effects because no one has ever truly been able to do the research on it because they cannot get approval from the government. From the little research that has been done, it appears that the health benefits outweigh the side effects, especially when you consider the side effects of drugs such as Oxycodone. Not to mention the whole other side of it being a true renewable resource that grows pretty much everywhere and easily. It would be wonderful to save some of the trees, don’t you think?

No, I am not a pothead. I am a single mother that has struggled very hard for the majority of her life. If it was legal, I would absolutely use it in moderation if it were prescribed.

As for it being a gateway drug, I believe alcohol -which is legal- is the first gateway drug. Marijuana may be the next step in that progression, but those that fall into the “gateway” would have more than likely made it there with the use of alcohol alone if marijuana didn’t exist.

As with all drugs, it shouldn’t be prescribed to young people unless they have extenuating circumstances like a terminal illness.

I have seen many adults addicted to all kinds of prescription drugs, and marijuana is just not addictive. If you have Netflix, take some time and watch a couple of good documentaries on the issue.

Oh, yeah. What about all the money it would save the government in the war on drugs? It would almost remove the black market for it? It would make the government massive amounts of money if it were taxed.

If it were legalized, it would have to be used in an appropriate manor as with any other prescription drug. As with any other drug there will be people that do not use it properly, just as with alcohol and prescription drugs.

Interesting topic as I just researched the whole medical marijuana issue for WA state 2 days ago. Hubby told me that my disorders were included. UMM, sure, but you still have to buy from a dealer or you have to grow your own and then you have to worry that the court may not like your reason. It's not sold in a pharmeucy here so there is not "prescription" for it, it's a docs note.

I plan on talking to my two really good cop friends about it in the morning. One's a capt and the other has been in for 20 years, over 40years between them. So I'm interested in their take.

But my take is, if I have to sneak around to get it I just can't. I'd be here freaking out waiting to get caught and waiting for the cops. I couldn't chill. That's just my guilty conscience and that SUCKS! lol I don't take painkillers cause I'm afraid to be addicted with the huge family history, so some pot for the bad days sure would be awesome.

I'm not saying that my wine, martini's or beer are any better, not by any means. I'm just saying I don't have to worry about the cops coming to my door if I'm drinking alcohol. If you are not driving under the influence of any substance, I'm all for legalized drugs. Stupid, is stupid, doesn't matter what you are drinking or taking, you need to be responsible.

Let's get something clear -- ANYTHING has the potential of becoming the object of addiction. It all depends upon the predisposition of the individual, physically & mentally. For example, to someone whose neurological connections are disturbed, washing their hands, counting steps, returning to touch their doorknob 23 times before they can leave the house, ... those behaviors are the addictions & that poor soul has Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). OCD is clearly at the far end of the spectrum of psycho-behavioral addiction.

Whether or not a human becomes addicted to a substance has much to do with his or her genetic predisposition. That said, if you are the daughter, grand-daughter, & great-grand-daughter of raging alcoholics, are you guaranteed to become an alcohol yourself? NO, because we humans have the power of reasoning -- a way to synthesize internal & external sensory & intellectual material to determine the consequences of our behavior & make wise choices.

Hence, my approach in all things w/re/2 my kids is to be certain they understand the consequences of any choice they make in Life. Our job is to educate, educate & educate some more, if we are to expect our values to become theirs. Conversely, as we parents all know, nothing stings more than getting a dose of our own bad behavior channeled through our little angels. (Remember the first time you heard your adorable toddler perfectly invoke your favorite four-letter epithet?... Quite loudly, in a crowded grocery store?!!)

I think it's just plain irresponsible to pretend that our kids won't ever be exposed to drugs. Talking to them about it won't predispose them to use drugs. But, refusing to acknowledge the reality that someday, somewhere, our kids will be offered illicit substances just adds a nearly-irresistible cachet to adolescents navigating the murky waters of separation & independence from us. If we're doing anything right, when the time comes, they'll have the tools to make smart decisions that will make us proud.
