My 41 Year Old Body

My 41-year-old body

Is it just me or is my 41-year-old body giving out on me? Last year, I was an athletic rock star, I won a tennis tournament, I ran a half marathon - I felt great as if I could do anything. This summer I was plagued with plantar fasciitis, stiff neck, sore lower back, and sore hips, to name a few. With every drip of sweat an injury followed.

First I must deal w/ my feet. Plantar fasciitis is killing me. Every morning I wake up and it feels like there are steel posts shooting up the heels of my feet. Physio appointment is booked. I also need to find myself a new form of exercise that doesn’t involve using the heels of my feet – go figure! I think spinning will work. I have done a few classes and they seem, pant, to, pant, be, pant, working, pant. I enjoy the camaraderie of spinning but I miss the convenience of running. Any other suggestions?

Now for the rest of my body…I think yoga is the answer. As a mom I always treat September as my “new year” so this September my new years resolution is going to involve a weekly yoga session. Do I have what it takes to Zen out and enjoy the many benefits of yoga? I am definitely not sure, but it seems like my cardio loving body is asking for some spirituality combined with core strength.

As this is the first day in three months that I am not blessed by the company of my lovely children all day every day, the regime has begun. Think good thoughts for me please.

Don't feel alone...my 42 year old body has given out also! It seems whatever pain my body comes up with, it stays there! I have had tennis elbow for approximately 6 months, and no, I do not play tennis. I lift my children, that's all. And no, I don't swing anything at them! About 4 weeks ago I injured something in my left arm probably when picking up a child, and now I can't lift with that arm. I went to the orthopedic that I previously went to for hip pain (hip pain that I STILL have) and he said there was not any apparant tear in the muscle or tendon, and he gave me antiinflammatory meds that have not helped. I still can't lift with my left arm, and now my tennis elbow on the right is getting worse because I am using that arm more. I hurt with every step I take!! Ya know what my doctor said?? He said I need to exercise! What??? Yeah...I believe he thinks that with a 12 year old with ADHD, a 3 year old, and an 18month old that I am a couch potato. I am not....true, I do not have an exercise regimen, but I never even get a chance to sit! How could all this pain and weakness be from not exercising? I truly think this is not normal to feel this way at age 42. Hell, I do homecare for the elderly and most days they are moving around better than I am! So....if you have any good suggestions other than "get off your ass and exercise" I would greatly appreciate it!
Hope your aches and pains go away!!

Thanks Terry & Christy,
I am lucky that there is a place near my house called Spynga that combines Spinning and Yoga so I'll try that for a while. My daughter is taking her Bronze Cross swimming level this year, so I was thinking of taking that with her to get some laps in.
I am going to "wiki" the inversion table - I have never heard of that.

I am 43 years old and play tennis at least 3 times a week. I had tennis elbow (because I was playing oh maybe 5 days a week) and finally went to a chiropractor that deals with sports injuries. Worked like a dream and my friend goes for her plantar fascitis. She says it works for her. I have now decided to listen to my body and when it hurts to stop.

good luck

Hey girls have you thought of alkalizing your bodies??

I am 57 and this certainty helped me. Be blessed. Jenny

My body is almost 54 and I am rec. black belt in Taekwondo. I started class a few months after turning fifty.
I find that when I get plenty of bananas and milk products I don't injure and I'm not as sore.
Eat what your body is asking you for.. it makes a difference. Even children crave the food that their bodies need to fuel all that activity.

Has your thinking towards your body changed? As a healer I find that most injuries are related to thoughts of "being too old" for the thing they love to do..

Big Smile
Good thoughts coming your way..
I get better and better, stronger and stronger every day..

Jenny - aren't you going to explain what alkalizing is? Is there a short Twittersized explanation you can give and the benefits?

Hi Lori - I love tennis - it is one of my great passions. I wish you lived in Toronto - we could set up a game (once I deal w/ my foot). I am off for physio on Tuesday am - we'll see what she has to say. My doctor has given me a prescrip for orthotics.
Thanks for advice on chiropracter, I can get physio covered by health plan so I'll see how that goes for now.
Cheers,
Roz

You are inspiring Donna - well done. I hope I can be as inspired at 54. I agree about the healthy body/healthy mind - very important stuff. I am very careful about what I eat, but I must confess to a slight addiction to good chocolate.
Cheers,
Roz

My husband is 42 and has tennis elbow as well. The meds have not helped him either. He does wear a brace on his elbow which helps him a bit. We're not sure if he'll end up having surgery but he just can't see to get rid of it. I have 3 kids as well and I know what you mean by never sitting down. I think I climb the stairs about 20 times a day. Hope you will get some relief soon!

Hi there! I can totally relate to what you are saying in so many ways! Yes, my New Year starts in Sept. too..with three boys and school...and all three of their b'days the first week of school it definitely starts with a bang! Then it's me time! Hate to tell you that yes, between 41-42 there is a shift. Don't know why but seems to be. So just like when you shifted your focus and daily routine when Baby No. 1 came along, here you must do the same. Massage is great for the Fasciitis. Get someone, prof/or otherwise, to give you a good foot massage after every run. Spinning is a fantastic workout and definitely easier on the joints! Tough to be indoors but you can adjust because it is so awesome! Yoga is the perfect Ying to the Yang of running/cycling, so incorporate that into your life too. Hot or Power yoga is more intense and sounds like you're like me and that you'd work hard and make it a personal competition so find a yoga class that is more focused on the breathing, stretching and relaxation aspects than the "power" that is so popular today. Breath and holding the poses is just as challenging but better for your stress level as it's definitely more spiritual! Good luck! And watch out...you will once again need a re-eval around 47! But keep on keepin' on! It's all good and self awareness is critical! Nurutre your body and keep listening to it! This too is critical! Good luck!
