My daughter is 4 years old and will start pre-school in September. I think it's time to ween her off her naps at daycare since she does not take naps other than at daycare. I have had this conversation with my daycare provider but she seems to think that we should wait until after school starts because she knows that starting school is a change for them and she may need a nap at that time. She does have other children at the daycare that do not take naps and have quiet time.

I know my provider is with my child 5 days a week 8 hours a day and knows her very well but what I am I to do when my daughter doesn't fall asleep until 9:45 - 10:00 p.m. and wakes up between 6:15 and 6:45 when she was for the longest time falling asleep at 9:00 and waking up at 7:00 - 7:15?

Any suggestions? I don't want to step on any toes at daycare but I think it's time to take my daughter off nap time.

Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

i have never had to deal with daycare issues but all my kids stopped taking naps about 3. My kids are also early rises and they go to bed around 8-9 depending on whether we are in school or summer.

Hope that this helps.

Having worked in the child care industry I can tell you that it is much easier for your provider to let your child nap. I feel you need to be assertive about this. Don't even let them convince you that they will wake her up after half and hour - probably won't happen. I have 20 years experience in child care and now assess child care workers so I see what happens.
Thanks
good luck

Hi Michelle. Did you know kids grow while they are sleeping? I found that to be so interesting. I learned from my experience that we needed structure that was consistent at bed time. For us, that meant if bedtime was 8:00, we would begin the process at 7:15. Usually it was brushing teeth, reading books, sometimes I would lay down with him for 15 minutes of talking or backrubs, saying prayers and goodnight.

If he came out of his room once for something not that important, I would say "okay, this is the last time you are allowed to come out of your room, Okay?" *smiling and nodding*. "You have to sleep now." He did. (He is an only child, which could have something to do with it.)

My son took naps until he was 6, (and I often gladly took them with him on weekends) but in Kindergarten (he was in an all day school) The kids were given a choice if they wanted nap or just quiet time. There was time during the end when I would ask the daycare provider to shorten his naps to no more that 1.5 hours and it seemed to work. Not sure if this is helpful, but good luck!
