Now that it's summer, is it "I'm bored!" time, too?

I know I'm getting old when I start pining for the days of my youth. Well, I do want to be younger, but not teenaged! Still, I remember how wonderful summers were when I was growing up; I never had to worry about entertaining myself (nor did my mom), because there were kids everywhere. My kids' experience is very different. Once school ends, kids are gone — off to sleep-away camp, Europe or Costa Rica. The ones who stay home, like mine, are "bored." But, I'm seeing more kids around, maybe because of the bad economy.

Do you get nostalgic for your summers, too, and wish your kids could be carefree and schedule-free?

I definetly get nostalgic for summers past. However, I love that my kids have friends in the neighbourhood to play with. Then again, mine are in summer day-camps sometimes too, as we have a business to run. My husband and I do our best to ensure that our kids have fun in the summer without getting bored. As we run our own business, we have the ability to ensure we spend time with them and do activities with them when friends are away.

I know of many parents in Canada that hire a nanny for the summer, as it gives the kids someone to play with while having someone around to keep an eye on them. Many people who are employed as nannies are kids at heart, and truly enjoy reverting back to a kid to play in the sprinkler, make tree forts, and ride bikes.

We had a rainy day here at CanadianSitter HQ, so it inspired me to write a blog about what to do on rainy days... this could also inspire ideas to rid the "I'm BOOORED" anthem any day as well! Go to www.canadiannanny.ca/blog.asp!

My kids just plain don't thrive schedule-free. We don't have travel plans and I missed the boat on their camp sign-ups, but I keep them on a camp-like schedule at home. I just got tired of dealing with the boredom in years past, so I think I've finally got it figured out!

Hi Vicki,

Recently I have written a lot of posts on my blog http://www.travelbargainmama.com about tackling this very issue of how to keep kids engaged in the summer. I have a toddler, and we've been doing lots of fun things, staying within a tight budget. Check out today's post:
