This weekend I had the great pleasure of meeting this beautiful young lady named Sami and her wonderful mom, Ellen. Ellen has been battling cancer for some time. Spiritual and emotional healing can be just as meaningful as physical healing. Sami and Ellen, their family, friends and aquaintances are doing what they can to help these two special ladies participate in an upcoming Breast Cancer walk. Anything you can contribute would be a greatly appreciated blessing.
I spent one hour with Sami and Ellen at a birthday party and they made an incredible impact on me. Sami has obviously grown up quickly because of her mom's illness. She is full of kindness and she has an appreciation of life that you don't normally see in a high school kid. Below is a copy of a letter she is sending out to everyone she knows to help her mom and herself get to the Cancer Walk. I think when you read this, you will see how special she is, too, and that you will make a contribution. G-d Bless!
On October 30, 2009, thousands of women and men will unite and walk 60 miles through our community. The Breast Cancer 3-Day is a weekend of hope, as we honor lives lost, celebrate survivors, promote breast cancer research and help bring breast cancer care to those who so desperately need
I am a Junior at West Boca Raton High School and my Mother is a teacher at Sunrise Park Elementary School. I would love to do the walk with my mother.
I have committed myself to walk and have agreed to raise a minimum of $2,300 (and to help my Mom reach her goal of $2,300) to help fight breast cancer. Net proceeds from the Breast Cancer 3-Days benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure to fund breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment programs, as well as the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund, to provide an endowment for breast cancer initiatives.
To some people, this walk is ‘just a long walk’ to raise money for Breast Cancer Research. To me, it’s way more than that. When I was in 4th grade, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. My mom told me (and my brother) not to worry, but of course I did. My mom had a lumpectomy and they were able to remove all the cancer. I remember asking my dad one night when my mom was sick from radiation; “Daddy when is mommy going to stop being sick”. His answer was he just didn’t know, probably after the treatment ends. When she did get better I was so relieved. Life went on as if nothing happened!!
Then tragedy struck again, when my mom went for her last mammogram to ‘release her from the oncologist’, they found cancer again. This time I was in 9th grade but my mom explained that this would be a little different then the first time. They had to remove her entire breast. She went for a blood test to see if she was a carrier. Thank god she isn’t. But she has since explained to me that most insurance companies don’t cover the cost of the blood work and we need to ‘fight to change that’.
My mom is brave, she had bi-lateral mastectomy with re-construction surgery in August of 2006. The cancer didn’t travel to any other part, so she didn’t need any treatments, but after surgery she stayed at my Grandmothers house for about 4 weeks to help her heal.
Anytime there is a walk to raise money for Breast Cancer, my mother and I always walk it. It’s a mother and daughter day. We walk, and then we have brunch. This day we always bond a little more!! In October, I will be a senior, then off to college! This walk means the world to my mom and me. I need to find supporters so we can have the opportunity to walk in October. After I graduate I plan on going away to college, so this might be the last opportunity for me to walk ‘side by side’ with my Mom and support Breast Cancer awareness.
Even though my mom doesn’t carry the ‘gene’, I still may get it. I can’t start mammograms until I am older but rest assured, I will get them regularly. As I am writing this letter, my mother is going through yet another surgery. This time it is nodule cancer caused from the radiation. She is having her thyroid removed and then needs some treatment and will be on medication the rest of her life.
In order to reach my goal, I am asking for your support in the form of a monetary donation. In exchange for your generous gift, I am offering to wear your name/logo on my shirt during the event. The amount of exposure, potential press coverage and advertising value that you/your company would receive will not go unnoticed. The event not only attracts thousands of walkers, crew members and volunteers, but thousands of spectators as well.
In conclusion, my mother and I would greatly appreciate your support in sponsoring us in this walk. It would be great and enduring experience for my mom and me.
Thank you in advance for considering giving us a donation.
