Please tell me I am not the only one with an older bed wetter

  • Rating: No Rating
Hi,
I guess I am starting this discussion to know there are others out there feeling the same. My daughter is 7 and half and she still wets the bed. In my heart I know she will grow out of it eventually - she is a very heavy sleeper. We take her to the bathroom before we go to bed (around 10.30pm) and this usually works - if we don't take her there is probably a 50% chance she will wet the bed. I don't really want advice as to how to solve it, just want to know if there are others out there with the same problem or if they have kids that have finally grown out of bed wetting.

Hi Michelle,

I have that problem with my 12 year old who will be 13 this coming week. We've taken him to the doctor, tried waking him up in the middle of the night, etc, and it still happens. Doc says his bladder hasn't caught up to his body and that he'll grow out of it. I'm sure it's embarassing for him and it is for me also - I tend to invite no one over ever. I can't help you too much but I can listen.

My son had this issue until he was nearly 8. And somehow he just grew out of it. It's not easy for you or her, but eventually it'll happen.

Hi Michelle

My son is now 8 and a half and also has the same symptoms, he is a very heavy sleeper and wouldn't wake even if he fell out of bed!

He hates wearing pull ups but i have tried everything else and he mostly wets through these as well?? I wish I could do more for him as he would love to have sleep over's and not have to hide the bed wetting.

Out of my 4 children. My 8 year old son still wets the bed. About 50% of the time if someone does not take him to the bathroom about an hour after he goes to bed or remind him to go after he has been in bed about 30 minutes. I have taken him to the doctor the who says he will out grow it. I do buy Huggies Goodnites for him too. Now thinking of my other children my first two children didn't wet the bed as old as he is however my 12 year old did and she has out grown it. Thanks goodness. So there is hope and the doctor was right. I do wish Huggies Goodnites made a size larger because my daughter did outgrow them before she stopped wetting the bed. Just my thoughts.

My daughter once slept through a fire alarm that was right outside her room - it was a false alarm luckily!

Hi I know how you feel! my daughter wet the bed till she was maybe 8 and a half or there abouts. we tried all the usual tricks which worked sometimes and not others and all of a sudden it stopped and it has never been a problem since she is now 13. Hope it happens for her soon .

Hi Michelle,

My daughter will be 9 in November and still wets the bed, but only occasionally now. About 6 months ago we couldn't afford to keep buying the pull ups so we put a mattress protector on, and I taught her how to change her sheets if she wets. At first I had her set her alarm for twice nightly, then lately we've set it for just once in the middle of the night. She sometimes sleeps through the alarm, or shuts it off in her sleep, and those are the nights she wets. Then she gets up and changes her sheets. She's getting better, and I think that she will out grow the problem soon.

I feel your pain. I have 8-year-old twin daughters, one of whom (on occasion) still can't make it through the night completely dry. Thank God she still fits into Nighttime Pull-Ups! Otherwise, I'd be certifiable.

It's weird though, her twin sister has been dry all night seemingly FOREVER. And they're TWINS for Pete's sake! Go figure. I guess it proves once again that every child is different--especially as it pertains to development, physical and otherwise.

Only recently (read: months after her 8th birthday) did she suddenly start experiencing "dry nights." Of course, my husband and I were completely baffled and yet thrilled beyond comprehension. Naturally, we showered my daughter with praise, although I suspect it's got little or nothing to do with her effort, determination or understanding the goal. I honestly think it's a maturational thing. In other words, her body had matured to the point necessary for dry nights.

Now she has four or five dry nights in a row, but occasionally not, so we still insist that she wears the Pull-Ups--just in case. But I suspect we'll get brave soon and ditch them for good. Hopefully, the gods of incontinence will smile upon us.

Yes, there will be a party when that happens. Everyone who attends (including the shareholders of Kimberly-Clark) will get a pony.

Hope by now you're feeling not so all alone. And please do visit my website (or blogs) if you ever need a chuckle (www.notesfromplanetmom.com, www.notesfromplanetmom.blogspot.com, www.planetmom.typepad.com). I write a slice of life newspaper column, drawing largely from the vat of kid-related chaos and hilarity present in my home.

Hello!
I had an older bed wetter - so you are not alone! My son will be nine in September and outgrew the bedwetting about 8 months ago. We wondered if it would ever end. I talked to the doctor about it and there wasn't really any medical reason. He was such a heavy sleeper that we had him wear goodnites. They are available for a reason! We also tried using the waterproof mattress covers without the goodnite. I guess you could say I was an enabler. He became dependent on the goodnites and had no reason to get up in the middle of the night. I ran out of goodnites about 8 months ago and it was too late in the night to go to the store. He stayed dry that night and every night after with the exception of maybe 4 accidents in the last 8 months. They say that pretty much all kids at some point will outgrow the bedwetting so that's good news. Good luck!

I have 6 children and just 2 of them had this problem. My 14 year old son finally had dry nights when he was about 6. My 8 year old son is still wetting the bed. They do have larger sizes of Goodnights (thankfully). The "night time underwear" does get expensive, but it sure beats the look of shame and embarrasment from my son. He is very frustrated with the whole situation, but I understand that it just takes time for some kids' bodies to mature. In the meantime I try to make sure I am very discreet when discussing this with him.

You are absolutely not alone! My oldest is five and still wets the bed, which he hates since the 3 year old has already stopped. I wet the bed until I was 8, and for a lot of kids it's just genetic and nothing they can do about it.

Okay - I am feeling like I am not alone. You guys are so great for helping me be patient. I guess I will just have to wait until she grows out of it. I hope it is the end of this year - I know she has a school camp next year.
