How do you feel about the idea of the President speakig to our nation's students next week?
Personally, I am not in favor of this idea. Not because I am a "right winger" (I actually fall somewhere in the middle - I am an issue follower not a wing follower) but because I don't like the idea of my son seeing this without me there. I know past Presidents have spoken directly to the youth - fine whatever. I don't have an issue of the President "talking" to my son. My major issue is with the teacher after he's done. Let's face it - most educators are pretty far to the left. My son is still at an age when what his teacher says means a great deal.
It is not so that I can "brainwash" him with my ideas. In fact hubby and I quite frequently disagree on issues (he's much more conservative overall then I am) so son hears both sides. Even when hubby and I agree though we present to him the other side. He very much has his own mind and makes it up himself. I am not convinced that is what would happen in a school setting.
It bothers me that if you disagree with something everyone automatically labels you as "right wing zealot" or "scared"! I just don't happen to agree with you. I didn't call you a bleeding heart liberal now did I? Please refrain from calling me names. We don't have to agree. You don't even have to understand my point of view if you don't want to try/can't but please respect the fact that I have the RIGHT to have a differing opinion than you. I thought THAT was what our country was founded upon!
I don't like the timing of it--for many states, Tuesday is the first day of school. Teachers need to be able to get the year--their schedules, routines, the educating of the students--off to a good start without interruption.
I have to admit that I am happy that my son isn't old enough to go to school yet, so that he doesn't have to watch this. Both my husband and I do not feel that it is right for a speech like this to be directed to children at school. He actually brought up what I thought was a good point... if it's not okay for tobacco industries to market in a child friendly way anymore (which by all means it should not be) then why is it okay for the president to give a speech aimed directly to the children? They are not old enough to vote, nor are they informed enough to be able to form their own views on politics... it seems a bit like brainwashing to me. But then what do I know? I'm just one of those conservative "right wing zealots" ;)
