I am putting together a proposal to work 30 hours a week for my company. I work for a Fortune 50 company in a field office. I would appreciate any tips and advice on what to include in the proposal, etc. Thanks for you help and advice.
What are your personal and professional objectives in doing this? For example, are you recently returning from a change in family status? Are you going back to school? Is your office downsizing, slow, etc.?
Without knowing more specifics, it's hard for me to provide input but in general, I would expect a proposal like this to include a few clear elements.
- What is the problem statement/opportunity?
- What is your proposed solution?
- How will it fill the gap and make for a win/win?
- What are the short- and long-term benefits and over what period of time?
- How will you assess/measure success and when?
- What is your backout or alternative strategy if it's not successful? How long will it take to adjust?
Thank you, Willowbottom! Good points to consider. I am currently working full-time at the company and have been here for 10 years. My company is constantly downsizing, so my initial thought is that this is a good time to approach them with a part-time proposal. My reasons are for the family. I have one daughter in elementary school and a second child that will be starting Kindergarten next year. I would love to have the opportunity to be home when they get off the bus in the afternoon.
From a the business perspective, it would be a cost savings for my department and the company while still keeping the knowledge I have from working here.
Again, thank you for your input. It is very valuable.
I have been thinking about doing the exact same thing. I've run the numbers and know I could make it with less money. I am also trying to build up my freelance writing services.
My son has a learning disability so I want to be home when he gets home from school to give him extra support.
I have been wondering how to approach my employer too. I am a contract employee so my situation is a little different. The current economy is on everyone's minds so I think that is a great angle to use.
Thanks for posting this question Kristin and thanks Willowbottom for your ideas!
