I'm reading Netherland by Joseph O'Neill about a guy in New York going through a divorce. It's absorbing, beautiful writing, and in some ways very "male." Worth reading if you love good writing about life in New York and life in general. About to finish it. Would love something to rock my world.

Try "Someone Knows My Name" by Lawrence Hill. Fantastic book following the entire life of an African Slave Woman. May sound heavy - it is, but you will not want to put it down.

My standard to fall back on is the Chinese Cinderella. Its beautifully written and helps me understand another culture. I typically read one "heavy" book, one that makes me think, and then a fluff book, one that is simply fun to read for the sake of reading, one that will undoubtably make me laugh. If you are in the market for a fluff book in the future check out my books at my blog charitymaness.blogspot.com or my site charitymaness.com. Easy reads with plenty of laughter readily available.

P.S. Good luck.

If you'd like to read something unique and inspiring that will make you laugh and cry, I hope it's not out of line to suggest my own book.........As a mom are you curious at all about what it would be like to carry someone else's baby? To give the the gift of a child to a couple suffering from infertility? My book, DELiVERiNG HOPE, is a story of giving, of family, of joy and overcoming adversity. I offered to carry a baby for my cousin and his wife who suffered from cancer-related infertility and the book is a story about our journey together and ultimately how it has touched our lives. Women have responded really strongly too it and it has been very popular with book clubs...................I just thought you might want to give it a try! You can check it out at www.deliveringhopebook.com................

God Of Small Things by Arundhati Roy is the most beautifully written book I have ever read!!! She is a master of words! She is the goddess of words!

I just finished The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson. The author is Swedish and wrote this book as the first in a trilogy. The book is translated into English and reminds me quite a bit of a more sophisticated and internationally flavored James Patterson novel. Brilliantly done, and one I would certainly recommend. I am about to start the second book, The Girl Who Played With Fire, and can't wait to see what happens!

A really great book, I just read it...The Art of Racing in the Rain. Just so good. I also recommend Hannah's Gift: Lessons from a Life Fully Lived.

I agree! That's also one of my favorites! Do you like Jhumpa Lahiri (Interpreter of Maladies, Namesake)? She's pretty amazing. Do you have any other favorites?

I just read an amazing book called "The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind" by William Kamkwamba and Brian Mealer. It's the true story of a boy in Malawi, who in the midst of a famine and against all odds, built a windmill to power his family's home. The story is gripping and inspiring!

My favorite "stumble" onto an amazing author who wrote a series of books that I found enlightening and inspiring is, Barbara Taylor Bradford. The collection is called the Harte Family Saga. My favorite book being "Woman of Substance" This novel just moved me and sort of changed my perception of the world. I have since read all of Barbara's novels, loved the saga best. Written in 1979, it is a bit dated but I just loved it!

Jackie Collins has a "hot" series with a woman called Lucky, not really a book of substance but entertaining and an easy read.
I am currently not reading anything new and look forward to being inspired as well, going thru my own divorce so I will hold off on Netherland for a while. I need a Break in my day!!!
I just love all the suggestions.

If you haven't read "The Time-Traveler's Wife" by Audrey Niffenegger yet, boy are you in for a treat. Don't waste your time on the movie--what a disappointment (I felt). The book is one of my all-time faves, and I read about a book a week. I'm reading her new one right now "Her Fearful Symmetry" which has been very absorbing. I also loved "Shadows of the Wind" by Zafron, the "Tattoo" books previously mentioned, "The World According to Garp" and "The Cider House Rules" or really anything by John Irving--and he has a new one out that I can't wait to read. Pat Conroy's older books also great. His new one was decent, not wow.
Hope that helps!
