Rookie Mom needs easy neat, healthy ideas for school snacks & lunches for her little Kindergartener. Montessori School is a 'Nut Free' Zone.

After I have researched what type of school he should attend, read all of the teachers resumes, checked out the class structure, made sure he would have some friends there, gotten everything on his school supply list, read books to him, gotten all of his uniforms with one to spare - I forgot that schools supply lunch or snacks! Yipes!!! After being in daycare so long with meals included I drew a blank on what meals are not messy, PB & J's not allowed. My boy isn't really a sandwich kid. He mostly takes them apart and eats the meat and cheese. I'm not into overly processed foods(eg. Snackables) or sodas but what can I give him that would be fun to eat for him, good for him, and not end up all over his white shirts??? Please help

Forget whether he will get his clothes dirty or messed up by food - it is going to happen no matter how hard you try. Great food snacks are the semi dried fruit bites, nuts (for the non allegeric types) mini carrots with a side of ranch pretzels and the all time great stand by Cherrios. You can always include apple slices, orange slices, celery sticks, grapes and raisens. You can cut up some small slices of different cheeses as a side as well.

Good luck.

Just to add to the other great ideas, instead of a sandwich, give him roll ups! Roll up slices of meats and cheese separately, you can place them in a small flat container and he'll think its cool:).

My daughter goes to a steiner school - she isn't big on sandwiches either - The school promotes healthy foods with minimal packaging. Her school is not a nut-free zone as you can see with the almonds.
She doesn't actually eat that much at school, but usually finishes it off in the car on the way home.
Okay we have:
snowpeas
passionfruit - take the flesh out to make it easier
cherry tomatoes
flat bread - (I use mountain bread or lavash bread)
dried apricots
almonds
apple
cucumber
cheese

Friend at work just found these at Trader Joes: "FIBERFUL handmade dried fruit bar"
These are chewy and filled with 6 grams of fiber. I tried the apricot one and it was very good. My friend said they are about $0.59 at TJ's!
