should kids be able to help with Thanksgiving dinner?

I think they should be able to that's why it a family together kind of Holiday like Christmas. They need to learn those special recipes that you know because your mother taught you them to keep the tradition alive. I also believe that it helps them under stand how to cook period and then on top of that they get a lesson in math and reading also in patience. There is a lot for a kid to help with without worrying about them. Plus there are some things that are fun for them as well. Just keep them away from anything that could possibly hurt them . Like burners and mechanical things like mixers or cuisinart . But whats your thoughts on this matter?

Absolutly, my children are involved all the time in preparing meals, setting the table doing chores etc. They are 8 and 6 and help making desserts, dishes etc. If you show them how to do things and supervise them, they learn. Children are more capable than we give them credit for. Besides you had to learn once too right? If you have the expectation that they can do it, they will. It is a great confidence booster and also is a fantastic bonding time w/ them. Have fun!!!

I believe there is a job for everyone including the smallest of children. I am a mother of six who has always placed my children in the kitchen working side by side this year I will have my nephews and my granddaughter as well. While they are still quite small there are still turkey cookies that need decorated, rolls that need heated etc...

Absolutely, it's part of all the fun. Kids love to cook, be with you and take pride in the fact that they can help. My daughter, now 28, always helped in the kitchen from the time she was quite little and now she is a good cook herself and loves to experiment in the kitchen.

Kids can always help! There are a myriad of things they can do: running up/down stairs to get something for you, putting out the cutlery, stiring the punch, or making desserts before the company comes and Mom's stress level goes through the roof. It's important to have all family members contribute - why not the youngest ones?

Vickie called me after Thanksgiving the first year I helped her two sons contribute to Thanksgiving dinner. One boy made an apple pie and mushroom bread pudding. The other made a root vegetable medley and pumpkin pie. Apparently poor Vickie only had 1 cake pedestal for two pies. Who's should she "feature" ?
YES - children of all ages can and should help with Thanksgiving meals.

My own children are always a part of special meals - setting the table, making special party favors for guests, washing dishes as I cook. When they were itty bitty - they had their own special apron and they stirred, helped measure ingredients and splashed in a pan of water to help clean. Now they are in college & they have their own special recipes they make for the family. I've taken my love for teaching kids to cook and started chef-k, culinary health education for kids. We do a class Thanksgiving Sides and Pies...Vickie's sons attended - by the way her solution? She put one pie on the pedestal and the other got the glass cover...brilliant mother solving a Thanksgiving dilemma. I'm kind of curious why this is a question... why wouldn't they? It would be the most supervised cooking of the year and there is always something they can do. Even my 3 year old is eager to hand me plates out of the dishwasher.

Why not...I think it creates special memories for everyone if they feel involved!

Of course they should as long as you are supervising them and not letting them go wild in the kitchen. Make sure whoever is helping you in the kitchen doesn't mind. Cooking with kids isn't for everyone especially with all the pressure of Thanksgiving.
Have fun

Yes I have thought that over as well. But my son is 17 and he feels that he isn't a "child or a kid" ^.^ they make me giggle. But yes I understand that others that don't have children may be unlikely to want them around them in the kitchen at Thanksgiving time . lol anyways you have a great Thanksgiving . and thanks for the response.

That sounds familiar ^.^ my children as well helped me in the kitchen doing things just like that and even the laundry. My son would wear them to me and I would say something my mother(a very very country woman )would say" skin a rabbit" and he would just giggle so hard. Then he would put them in the washer. Hey thanks for coming in and chatting with us. ^.^ Have a great Thanksgiving. ^.~
