I have started a small flock of chickens. They are more interesting and fun than I suspected. I can't believe how big they are & so fast!
The funny part is, I'm supposed to have only 2 different breeds--but I think I've got more. Some of their feathers look really different. I bought more chicks last week, so that makes 40 birds for me. They're supposed to be one breed, but I think maybe not.
So far they are very healthy and eat like crazy.
How can I tell if I have certain dark feathered breeds? They're all large breeds.
We had chickens for a couple of years. When my husband deployed to Iraq, I got rid of them all. I miss driving into the driveway and having them run to greet me. Everytime I cut up a watermelon I think about the times when I would bring them the rind and they would peck it clean. :)
We hatched a couple of chicks from eggs the hens laid. It was a great experience for the kids and me. :)
Thanks for the tweet!
I'm really finding them more interesting than I thought.
And they really do chirp--just like other birds! I wonder if/when they'll cluck.
I'd like to have a few hens do the baby care next year. It's a pain for me, but not too hard. I think the hen must be a superior mother for the chicks--I mean she's really got the feathers for the job, and knows how to keep them warm! :)
