twitter moms: the influential moms network

It's the second day of fall and the flu is already on every parent's mind. Should your kids get a flu shot? Or do they need to get a swine flu shot (aka H1N1)? Do they get one shot? Or four shots? Lord have mercy, can this get anymore confusing? Maybe we should all just lock ourselves in our houses and emerge in the spring. Sounds like a plan, but not a very practical one.

I agree this is getting a little confusing. Best case scenario is the single shot immunization which it sounds like they will use for low risk children (here in Canada). Lots of different messages coming from all sides. Once it's available, I think I'll get the flu shot for myself and the kids. It's a bit of a pain, but probably worth it.

I did a blog about it. Check it out if you have time.

The flu & Swine Flu -- What's the diff?

The letter we received from the CDC said that the H1N1 is two shots. Then there is the regular shot. Everyone should get the flu shot.( CDC recommends it for everyone) Each year it builds up your immune system even more. The flu has started early this year, so I would get your flu shot soon. H1N1 is a personal choice. The regular flu shot does not cover H1N1.
My children have had the flu shot every year and have never had the flu. I did not get the shot a couple of years ago I got the flu and almost died. But no one else in my house got it because they all had their shot.

No shots in my family!!

I don't listen to the Fear Mongering that they are putting out. Who puts out all the "BS stats"? The drug companies that are going to make money.

All types of flu shots have been scientifically proven to have long term effects even through generations.

Take 40 minutes & listen to real Doctors rather than a Money grubbing Pharma company.

The Truth About Flu Shots

These are just 2 Doctors, there are so many others saying the same thing!

Health Workers Won't Take the Swine Flu Vaccine

Just think about it - The drug companies are starting to get in deep poop because of the lies & hidden info that they have known for years but, continue to push into peoples bodies.
Even the FDA will not even listen to parents of children that have been injured because of drugs that were approved with fraudulent testing & reports.

I suggest we all look at other places to get our info - the people that are benefiting from these drugs are NOT going to give you the truth.

Here is an interview with Dr. Anne Schuchat from the CDC on the H1N1 vaccine that might answer some questions.

The flu shot protects for the seasonal flu. The h1N1 shot protects for the swine flu which is a different strain of the flu.

Okay Amelia - thank you for that. I had no idea, that there was an expectation to have 2 different flu shots. You blog posting is a great resource, very helpful (even for us Canadians), thank you.

I have been doing a series of blogs about vaccinations on my blog Momma's Little Helper. Here's the entire blog I did on flu shots:

It's the second day of fall and the flu is already on every parent's mind. Should your kids get a flu shot? Or do they need to get a swine flu shot (aka H1N1)? Do they get one shot? Or four shots? In any event, I will make an attempt to sort it out for you. As always, I am not a doctor, just a mommy blogger, so be sure to discuss flu and swine vaccinations with a licensed health care provider. You are in no way going to confuse me with a doctor. Right?

And most importantly, the decision to vaccinate your child is yours and yours alone. I am in no way telling you, you should or should not vaccinate your child. Are we cool? Good, then let's continue.

What's the difference between the flu and the H1NI (swine) flu?

The seasonal flu occurs between fall and late spring. The symptoms include fever, coughing, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, headaches, body aches, chills and fatigue. Every year, approximately 5 to 20 percent of the population gets the seasonal flu.

The H1N1(swine) flu symptoms are more severe and include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills, fatigue, and possibly vomiting or diarrhea. It is a new contagious virus that is spread by coughing or sneezing. It has two genes from flu viruses that normally circulate in pigs in Europe and Asia, plus avian genes and human genes.

What exactly is an epidemic anyway?

On June 25th the Center for Disease Control released information revealing that there were more than likely over one million (1,000,000) cases of the disease in the US, most of which had not been reported or diagnosed.

You can also go to their FluView website to get a weekly state by state update of the flu virus. If you are wondering, Illinois is in the brown which means that the flu is widespread in our state. Yay!

Will the seasonal flu shot protect me from the swine flu?

No it will not. If you do decide to get vaccinated, you will need to get two shots -- one for the flu and the other for the swine flu. The LA Times just reported that next year the two shots will more than likely be combined.

How many shots does my child need?

According to the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases, children under the age of ten will need to have two doses of the H1N1 vaccine administered one month apart.

What's in the swine flu shot?

According to the FDA, the first candidate H1N1 vaccines will be monovalent vaccines prepared in eggs like annual influenza vaccines and will not contain either aluminum or oil-in-water adjuvants (MF-59 or ASO3) that can be added to manipulate the immune system and stimulate production of more antibodies.

Will Swine Flu Vaccines Contain Mercury?

Thimerosal, which is a mercury-based preservative added to multi-dose vials of inactivated annual influenza vaccines and other vaccines. Thimerosal WILL be added as a preservative in multi-dose vials of most inactivated (injected) H1N1 swine flu vaccines, although there reportedly will be a limited supply of single dose vials of inactivated swine flu vaccine that do not contain thimerosal. For more information, please visit The National Vaccine Information Center.

What are the side effects?

The common side effects were those you'd expect from seasonal flu vaccine: pain where the vaccine was injected (reported by 36 percent of Australian volunteers and 70 percent of UK volunteers) and muscle aches or headaches (reported by 45 percent of Australian volunteers and 42 percent of UK volunteers).

Hi,

I am no more worried about swine flu than all the other negative news around because I think it won't help me to be worried.

Well swine flu has gotten into the city that I live here in Brazil. The general hygine in the city is not so good so when anything appears it infects lots of people. Recently there have been lots of cases of meningitis here too. My friend's nephew of 2 years old just died of meningitis this month. Just terrible........
So personally I just take my mind off of it, take my precautions and pray that my boys don't get anything. If I don't do that, I'll get too worried and won't function.
Recently I wrote about instilling a positive mindset.
I also take natural meds when they catch viruses.
Blessings,

My daughter is currently recuperating from H1N1. It has actually been pretty mild. Low grade fever for 4 days, headache, fatigue, diminished appetite and a bit of a cough. I had already decided to not get the H1N1 immunization for my kids. I usually do have them get the Flu Mist for the regular seasonal flu but felt the H1N1 vaccine was too new for me to feel comfortable with it,esp. with some of the negative info I'd been hearing about it. I think this is one of those times when you weigh the risks of each side and decide what you are most comfortable with. Both my girls have had the regular seasonal flu in the past and were quite ill which is why I normally get the Flu Mist for them. Given our experience with swine flu I will stick with my initial decision to not get the H1N1 vaccine for our family.

Wow, ladies thanks for the engaging discussion about Swine Flu. There are a few things I want to touch on. I am no fan of the big pharma companies, but when it comes to vaccinations, I don't believe in conspiracy theories. When you compare what the pharma companies make on drugs like Viagra compared to vaccines it doesn't pan out.

I do believe that holistic medicine and traditional medicine CAN work together. I do believe it is important to wash your hands, take vitamins, eat healthy and keep a positive attitude. As well as get your flu shots! The two can and do work together.

Now, as for the H1N1 shot it is made exactly like the flu shot, just so you know every year they "alter" the flu shot for that year's strain of the flu. So, in essence you are getting a new shot every year. That being said, the shot will contain mercury, so if you do have concerns about that, please visit The National Vaccine Information Center.
