Take action if you don't want your kids banned from libraries!

You may have seen reference to the CPSIA legislation as it applies to children's toys and handmade items, but did you know that as currently written, it also applies to children's books?

Unless the law is changed, effective in mid-February, either children's books will have to be pulled from the shelves of school and public libraries OR children under 12 will be banned from libraries.

Think I'm kidding? See this press release from the American Library Association for more information.

I just finished contacting the CPSC and my representative and Senator. (Yes, I'm from Minnesota, and we currently have only one Senator.) I also alerted my family and friends to this situation.

What are you going to do to be sure your kids can continue to enjoy libraries?

How funny - I posted a blog on this a few weeks back (http://www.twittermoms.com/profiles/blogs/by-helping-our-public). Guess I don't have enough followers to make a blip on the blogosphere :-)

My son's stepmom is a librarian, she said this is the most recent documentation for libraries:

this is getting slightly overboard....banning children from libraries? Pulling books down? This is silly....How long have libraries been around? And I am pretty sure haven't read any articles about how someone got sick from a library book. If they do this, they might as well pull books out of stores too....

They DID have to be pulled from stores on Feb 9, unless the owners still don't know about the law. In that case, they're committing a federal felony. That's why EVERYONE needs to contact their US Senators and Representatives to amend this law to be reasonable. There are devastating unintended consequences of this law. Go to YouTube, search for CPSIA and watch some of the videos. There are three new ones this week that I know of, one is a protest in the NYC garment district, where 1/4 to 1/2 of all garment district workers are expected to lose their jobs as companies shut down their kids clothing lines. That's happening all over the country, businesses closing their doors, designers getting out of kids clothing lines because testing will be too expensive as the law is written. The "stay" of testing is only on some products and is only temporary.
