Tape Recording teachers for children

  • Rating: No Rating
I have a few children I work with who would benefit from tape recording the teachers class. However, the school districts do not allow tape recorders on the classroom. Questions have been rasied by parents on whether or not the school districts real reason for not allowing tape recorders in the classroom has to do with the teachers ability " to deny" what happens in the class.
It's a heated discussion; one that I would love to hear more opinions on.

If you have been in this situation with your child or yourself, please leave a comment on how you handled this.

I used to mandate that my son use a tape recorder in school becuase he has ADHD i can not imagine a child not being able to record a lesson for purposes of learning and studying. the school systems are bad enough as is, why deny a child a helpful and useful way to further their learning the best way they can. that's just crazy. and besides, isn't school a public place? I assume we are talking about public school. my son is in private so maybe that is why he was allowed to and that's just not right or fair.

Being a school teacher myself, I know that the majority of the reason is because of teacher, student confidentiality... Many students have IEP's and accomodations that are being made to them - Some children have tests read to them, some students need more help than others. Also if a student says something in class, and a parent hears something that should not have been said by that child, that can cause the school a lot of issues - and trust me - The last thing a school wants is an issue from a parent... I realize it is an issue and I have issues with the whole policy as well, and I am a teacher... But like I told my fellow colleagues the other day - I am tired of having to fit intot eh little box they want me to fit into, not being able to teach the things that need to be taught because it might "offend" someone. Too many parent's these days want to be their childs friend instead of a parent, and everyone is suing the schools and teachers for the most ridiculous things and winning... So I can totally understand them not wanting a class recorded, because someone (whether it is s student or the teacher) may say something that could be taken the wrong way and people will get upset over it.

I am an elementary principal and from that standpoint, everything said on that recording would be scrutinized. Privacy issues would also prevent the recording due to names being called out giving student identities. What would be the purpose of the recording? If it's for the notes, then a mimio board with a recorder would be great. No one could be seen or heard on the recording, but the teacher's board notes and other notes for the students would be saved and could be displayed on a whiteboard for individuals, small or large groups.

Hi Jennifer,
What you said is so true! A new problem is growing: cell phones with voice recorders and cameras. Whew!

Thanks Ladies,

Are there laws that prohibit the use of the tape recorders in class rooms? BTW- what is a mimio board? I never heard of one.
In the situation that I am refering to , the use of the tape recorder is for note taking.

Thanks,
Marcella

I'm sorry. I've been neglecting Twittermoms, but I'm back! Mimios are a small device that is attached to a whiteboard to enable classnotes to be recorded and displayed if a capture device is used. Great for visual learners who need to read what is being said to truly focus.
