I was reading about this in the newspaper today. It sounds like it wouldn't be a bad time to get emergency plans in place and be sure we have well-stocked households. We don't have to panic, but we can be prepared.

Widespread illness could really wreak havoc on the economy, couldn't it?

UpDate!
I understand that the U.S. has declared Public Health State of emergency. 20 cases has been reported now in the U.S. Ohio and New York are 2 more states that have been added to the list.

They have a drug Tamiflu that they will be using.

It is scary. This is a virus. There is not much we can do about viruses . I believe we need to be prepared and aware. Many people don't even realize how big of a concern this flu is.

Hi!! I live in DFW but all my family lives in Mexico, I have just received an email from a very good friend of mine, that works in PR (in Mexico) and she just told me that the government is taking things EXTRA seriously, right now they are in phase3 (out of 6) so they are closing churches, malls, restaurants, schools, etc to prevent the virus from spreading even more... I think they are working hard to keep it under control. Any information you can log to www.cdc.gov (control disease center)
Thanks!!!

I agree with keeping your immune system built up. For me and my family that looks like in addition to making sure we take our daily supplements, it's also limiting the amount of SUGAR, caffeine and processed foods and white flour/grains. These are known to lower the body's immunity to disease (read 'Sugar Blues'). Get plenty of rest, eat your fruits and vegi's, and drink water.

Also ready Jay Gordon's tweet, RT @JayGordonMDFAAP (famous pediatrician I highly respect) - 'Please, please, please do not buy into the Swine Flu hype. And don't buy Rumsfeld's Tamiflu: http://tinyurl.com/zogma' You can follow him for more info re: the flu.

I heard that they have raised it to a level(3) with the highest level being a (6).
Margait, I agree with you about watching your intake of caffeine, sugars and processed foods.
I also take supplements and I keep a bottle of oreganol oil. I put 5 to 7 drops in a 2 ounce spritzer bottle with distilled water. I spray it every so often to kill bacteria and virus's. Oreganol oil has been known to kill 23 different types of bacteria's and virus's. We need not panic, but keep up our immune system and hopefully this flu will be under control soon.

Too paranoid??? My boss (who's female) thinks i'm a bit paranoid...i have to travel to Los Angeles from Phoenix on Wednesday and chose to drive 6 - 7 hrs than to risk the flight which is a helluva lot shorter (one hour)...i have a legitimate reason to be paranoid: i had the flu/pneumonia a couple of weeks ago and it was the worst strain i've ever had...even my two c-sections were cake compared to this...i was out of work for almost two weeks, couldn't get out of bed, and had all of the symptoms equivalent to the swine flu except for the vomiting/diarrhea part...i really do not wish to have a repeat occurrence :)

Gina,
You do have good reason for being careful, building your immune system back up is important. Have a safe trip and enjoy your drive!

From what I can gather between the CDC website and the news (to be taken with a grain of salt) this is a new strain. I work in a medical laboratory and have tested flu samples for the past 7 years. Every year the CDC monitors trend and shifts of flu viruses. This is how they gauge what to include in the vaccination. Trend changes generally result in not so bad flu seasons. Major shifts from flu types that are in the vaccination will result in bad flu seasons ie more people contracting the flu and the symptoms lingering a little longer. I understand the World Health Organization and the CDC being concerned because this is a new strain. Obviously new strains would mean no one is "immune". BUT think about your immune system and how vaccinations work. Generally you are injected with a dead virus, your body comes to sniff it and makes antibodies against it. However, there are now vaccinations for our kids that we had to build up immunity for ourselves such as chicken pox and everyone in the past who got the flu. I think more people will probably get sick, just because we need to build immunity. Newborns have to do this with just about every virus they come in contact with and you would not believe the thousands that are out there. I think my children had every one of them. By all means be careful and don't go around licking doorknobs, but I really don't think this is the next plague.

Just for perspective- Does anyone have any idea how many people die each year from the flu? We have vaccination available-some of those that get sick took the vaccination and some didn't. The flu season of 2003-2004 the CDC missed on the vaccination. Very bad flu year. Do you know how many people get the flu every year? Millions. Tens of thousands die each year from the flu. What is making this unique is it is a new strain. Just keep all this information in mind. By all means be careful but don't stop living your life. Do what you do everyday- wash your hands!!Get plenty of rest! The news is making me crazy. They are not any different than any other show-after ratings. You have to be able to weed through the hype to get the news.

I heard today that people in the U.S. are not dying from the swine flu, that by the time it got here it was weakend. I also understand that it is affecting people between the age of 20 and 40, so far.
Colostrum,Silver Shield, olive leaf extract, coconut oil, oreganol and elderberry are a few immune enhancers.
I use coconut oil and oreganol all the time.
