I'm taking my 18 month old son on a weekend trip to a family friend's house.
I'm worried because we'll be driving for about 4 hours, and that would be the longest car ride he's ever had. He'll be sleeping in a place that is crib-less. The whole trip is totally out of his normal routine.
Anyone have any tips or suggestions for taking a methodical toddler on a roadtrip and mini-vacation?
Be sure to take comfort bedtime things that belong to him....I used to have a portable crib/playpen for just these occassions....Is this possible for you? Either to take one along or to rent/borrow one while there?
Remember children are much more adaptable than we think .....Continue to be a loving and patient Mother and everyone will do just fine!!!....Enjoy!!!
I agree with Patricia - comfort items are a must on trips like these! We took our son on his first extended road trip at 3 1/2 months - a twelve hour treck to Colorado! Most important are keeping to his everyday routines as much as possible - sleeping, eating, snacks, etc. Not sure how practical this is for a four hour trip, but we found that frequent stops helped his mood (and ours!), and also kept him from sleeping the entire trip (which can easily get them our of their sleeping routines). While you're there, a pack-n-play helps to keep them contained, especially when it comes to bedtime.
It's worth repeating that our children really are much more adaptable than we think ... I'm sure both of you will do great! Enjoy your trip.
Thank you everyone who commented! We took along a travel crib, some of his favorite comforts from home and lots of fruit snacks for the car. He did great! We actually ended up taking a 16 hour car trip the following month and he did even better! I wonder how I got such a great kid!? :)
He got a little fussy on the car ride from nor cal to Seattle, but we stopped and let him run around at some rest stops, and tried to keep him busy playing kid-friendly music and dancing with him in the car. :)
