What age should kids learn to tie shoes?

I think it's bizzare that I see 8 year olds that can use a computer but can't tie their shoes. I remember learning to tie my shoes by the time I was 5. Has anyone else noticed this?

Yes. Our son, 6 attends a Montessori school where the children line their shoes up on wooden shelves outside before entering the school. I've never seen so much velcro!
I recall the day I mastered tying my own shoes. I was 4 and it was a huge deal to me!

Our school begins to work on it in preschool, and gets serious in kindergarten. They want all of the kids to be able to tie their own shoes by the end of kindergarten.
Halfway through the year, only 2 of the 10 in my son's class had it mastered.

I can understand the frustration but also think about the complexity of tieing and manipulating shoelaces versus moving a mouse. My son has developmental delays and at 7, is just now learning how to tie his shoes. We have never used velcro but each time we put on his shoes, I walk him though the steps and let him try.
Like everything in life, kids will learn at their own pace. We can't force it or manipulate them to do anything on
our time. We just need to be patient and encouraging and to be observant to their readiness.

I thought my daughter should know how to tie her shoes before she started kindergarten. Made a a practice shoe out of shoebox with holes and strings. Thinking she would love this and showed her new "toy" about a month before school was to start. She took one look, wrinkled her nose and walked away. Okay, I thought I would make it fun, so I tired again and again and AGAIN showing her how much fun it is tie your own shoes, too no avail she looked at me like I was crazy! Finally I looked at her and said "Fine, go barefoot!" To make a long story short, on her first day of school she brought out her new school tennies, put them on and yep you guessed it, tied her shoes! I should have learned...she did the same when we began pottery training but this is a whole new blog!
In short...........Don't get to< ahref = "http://www.divorceandthechildren.com/> stressed about it - they will tie their shoes WHEN they are ready not when you think they should be ready!

My son will be 6 on Saturday and still hasn't mastered it. Though, most of his shoes are usually slide ins. I'm not too concerned since I was 6 when I finally got it.

My 1st 2 kids could tie their shoes by the time they were 5. Number 3 is taking his time. He's STILL working on it, and he's six! It drives me crazy. To many "slip" on & velcro style shoes. No laces anymore!

My stepson didnt learn to tie his shoes until he was 7 or so and had no desire to learn. Now the amount of choices parents have for their children is so overwhelming and it makes life easier for the parent to but shoes that slip on or velcro. My 7 year old has been lacing his own shoes since he was 5 and started kindergarten. To many times I hear the teachers beg parents to teach their kids how to tie their shoes and learn to zip the coats and put hats and gloves on, but most kids I see today can't do a lot of it themselves and I feel it is the parents who sometimes don't have the time or the patience to help the kids learn. Of course this is not the case entirely, everyone has their own reasons for why things are the way they are but for the lazy ones it is wrong................

If parents refuse to buy velcro, kids will have to learn to tie their shoes. THis all comes down to something I was talking about with a friend of mine today - A lot of parents these days have no patience, or time for their own children - Why have them if you are not going to pay any attention to them
My youngest daughter was 2 when she learned to tie her shoes, my son was 3 and my oldest was 3 as well. It does require a lot of eye hand coordination, but my husband has the simple method for tying shoes that his dad taught him when he was a kid and that is how my kids learned. Start like you would with wrapping the laces to then make the bow, but make both bows at the same time and then wrap them around one another and pull - viola - it is tied!
BUt I think parents do need to teach their kids to tie their shoes, at their own pace, and forget the velcro - You aren't doing your kids any favors!

Yes, it can be very frustrating to teach a child to tie their shoes. But every child is different and will learn at their own pace. I tried pushing my son to learn to tie his shoes from age 5...it took until he was 6.5 to finally get it!
Once he "got it" though, it was only 3 days before he could do it by himself.
I know the K teachers need as much help as they can get, but if you want the kids to learn at your pace, you better get velcro! Because not everyone will be able to master this hard hand/eye coordination combo until they are ready.
Remember, there are also so many other things in life that will be difficult for our kids, we need to help with what we can now. By giving our support on the little things, it will be easier on them to come to us for the Big things in life later!

They are all so different. My youngest son taught himself at age 5. My husband and I each thought the other helped him, but he figured it out. My oldest son (age 8) knows how to do it, but still likes me to do it so it is tighter. My daughter (also 8) has been doing it since she was 5 also. I think with slide on shoes being so popular they don't get as much experience with it.
