What do you think of when you hear someone say "I'm a designer"?

I started working my business full time on September 1st and as you may have seen from my previous post, I love what I do but the money isn't flowing ;).

There are so many designers out there for web and graphic design and I've noticed more and more that as I meet people and explain what I do they just look at me and smile and shake their heads yes while I speak. This makes me think that they are thinking "Another designer", or yea I would love to have something designed but that's way to much money.

The more chance I get to speak and talk to people about my designer to help them, the more they begin to listen and the more they become involved with the converstation.

I know there are many designers out there that do wonderful work as well and charge way more than I do, but at times I don't even get a chance to talk prices because they assume it would cost to much.

So what do you think about when you go to a networking event and someone says "I'm a designer" do you see dollar signs? do you think, oh boy another one?

I love designing but I love helping people and educating people even more and that is why I'm working on my workshops but I started to think that maybe I should rebrand my company as more of a consultanting company rather than just a design company. I have no issues with helping people make what they have even better or showing them the tools to have a better understanding.

I would love to hear your honest thoughts on this topic and welcome all feedback!

Have a great day,
Angela

Interesting. I'm guess you are a web designer? You just wrote that you were a designer and that is a broad spectrum of design. The consultant angle sounds really good. Then again as I work with many designers I know that each one has their own skill set. No designer is the same. Do I think here we go again another designer? No, but that's because this is an area of interest to me.

Hi Pamela,

I am a web and graphic designer with a background in marketing. Sorry I should have made that clearer.

Thanks for your comments, there are so many web and graphic designers in my area and as I go to local networking events I feel like no one really wants to listen to what I have to say once I say that I'm a web and graphic designer.

I'm trying to determine my niche, and how to get more people interested in my services and in turn receive more clients. I know that building a business can take some time and I have gotten a few good clients to far but I feel like I'm spinning my wheels meeting a ton of great people and spending money on gas to just not have a good return.

I'm not sure if its me or if there is something else to look into.

Hi Angela- When I hear someone just say "designer", I would ask what type of designer i.e. interior, architecture, etc. I think it's a much needed service that you provide especially for folks like me who just don't have a clue on graphics and that sort of stuff, lol. I also think networking is all about building relationships and most of us would prefer to work with someone we like and trust so establishing that at networking functions would be really important. I've found that it works best for me when I don't talk about what I do but ask the other person lots of questions about what they do and wait for them to ask me. Most of us do love to talk about ourseves so it's a good way to warm up to the other person. I don't know if this helps but thought I'd share. -Janette
