What is the best way to use Twitter?

Okay, call me silly or a non-techie but I have 1600 friends on Twitter and am wondering how to best follow the threads and stay connected to my followers. Is there some secret way to search for the updates from my followers that I am missing? What is the best way to keep up and connect with your followers information when there are so many. Help. Looking at ways to get followers that have my same interests. I am a mom and I work from home as well. I am afraid of getting some of the apps that give you automatic followers. Any safe ideas that don't take up too much time?
