Here's something to think about if you are a new mother. "You Are The Mirror", the only mirror that your baby looks into every day. Approve of your baby even when he's crying. You can do it, you know, even when you say no. There's love in your eyes, a soft smile on your face, and love, love, love in your heart. He'll see it.
You know that one of the greatest gifts you can give your baby is the total confidence people need to walk through life. Confidence to try, confidence to fail, confidence to love. Babies receive that confidence by looking into the mirror of your face and receiving approval for what they are. You are the mirror. Your face tells them what they are. The tone of your voice reinforces it. The gentle hands do the same. Your face is your tool. Your voice, your hands. Use these tools and watch your baby flourish. Just remember, you cannot fool babies. You can fool adults but not your baby.
And please, don't forget to be very, very good to yourself when baby is taking a nap.
In conclusion, talking on the telephone, texting your friends. watching television, are all behind you now. It's a new world for you. You are now a sculptor, shaping a new human being. It' one hell of a job. But the effort you put into the "infant time" and the results are immeasurable. At first you want to see smiles, relaxation, trust, and yes, confidence in that tiny face and body. And you will. The tenderness, the love, the joy in you translates into confidence and strength in your baby. He knows who he is because you told him before he could talk or walk. Have fun, love your baby, and know the joy of giving to a new life from day one, all the tools he or she needs to grow up strong and ready to meet the world.
