Hi Tali,

I usually have small (just family and a few friends) over to the house for a small party. But this year, mainly because of low resources (money) I have asked the kids what they want to do for their birthday. My little girl who just turned 7 wanted to go see and move and eat out. My twin boys wanted to have a backyard grill out with friends and swimming in the pool. Talk to your kids you might be surprised what they would want to do. There are also other ideas for parties. Chuck E Cheese and McDonalds (plus many others) offer party packages that you can buy. This usually includes a meal for each child with a toy with cake and ice cream. You know what the best part is... You don't have to clean up the mess.

it's a recent ritual, but I surprise my kids. when they get up in the morning of their birthday they find various notes with hints to help them find their presents around the house. I found out that sometimes they are more excited with many small items than with one big and expensive. and the hunt makes it even more fun...
We also make it a rule that the birthday person chooses a restaurant for dinner....
Happy Birthday!

Hi Tali -

For our birthday rituals we decorate the birthday persons bedroom while they are sleeping and they wake up with decorations and balloons all over their room, along with notes giving hints of where they can locate a special gifts in the house. Then they receive breakfast in bed -like the Queen or King they are for the day. The birthday person also chooses the restaurant for dinner that evening.

We say this poem:

When I have said my evening prayer,
And my clothes are folded on the chair,
And mother switches off the light,
I'll still be *___ years old tonight.

But from the very break of day,
Before the children rise and play,
Before the darkness turns to gold,
Tomorrow, I'll be *___ years old.

*___ kisses when I wake,
*___ candles on my cake.

Put in the age your child's age and the age they will be on their birthday.

Here is a link to a beautiful story you can tell on your child's birthday - I have done with with my daughter and even adults - it is so special.

a friend baked my son's first birthday cake, decorated with a bunch of plastic balloons. The next year, I stuck those tacky balloons on his cake again, then used them on my mother's cake a few weeks later. At this point, our stupid balloon tradition had started. Had I known, I'd have used something different, but it's too late for that. It's not a birthday if those balloons aren't stuck in the birthday cake.

I used to get store made cakes, but one year he wanted a theme that they didn't have, so we tried out best to make the themed one ourselves.
Turns out even though they aren't perfect he liked it better!
Every year he picks a theme, we bake a cake, & decorate it together!

This is a great question. I know a family who honors each person on their birthday. Birthday person gets to choose what meal they would like.

They come together for dinner and go around the table and tell the birthday person why they honor them, what gifts they give (non material) and why they appreciate the birthday person. I think it is wonderful.

You get to pick dinner, eat cake for breakfast and we have a special birthday hat you must wear! I love Birthdays!

The birthday poem is adorable!
When mine were little, I had a plastic birthday tablecloth. You could get the pre-made or have one made special for each child by having a plain tablecloth and have them add drawings or decor to it each year. I also went to a crafty store and made a special dinner plate so that the birthday child ate their meals on the special plate for the day. I think it's also neat to videotape the birthday child on one tape, collecting segments year after year. And don't forget to find that one doorway (closet?) where you can mark how tall they have grown!
