Something my sisters and I came up with was a Birthday theme, such as a book birthday party and everyone that was invited would bring books as gifts. Or another was dress up and all the kids dressed up as whatever they wanted and their party gifts were a mini suitcase filled with dollar store dress up. I like the theme idea because its easier for the party attenders to figure out what to get the child whose birthday you are attending. It narrows the possiblities any way.

Hi Tali -

For our birthday rituals we decorate the birthday persons bedroom while they are sleeping and they wake up with decorations and balloons all over their room, along with notes giving hints of where they can locate a special gifts in the house. Then they receive breakfast in bed -like the Queen or King they are for the day. The birthday person also chooses the restaurant for dinner that evening.

This household is full of summer babies. All of our birthdays occur in a months span. We begin with the Mommy on July 3rd, then my oldest will be turning 16 on July 9th. Dad ends the month of July on the 31st and CJ just had to be born a day later on August 1st.
Too much hassle and expense to throw 4 different parties so a few years ago we started a tradition of going to an amusement park to celebrate our birthdays. This year we are going to Disneyland since they are offering free admission on your birthday. Should be lots of fun.
Wishing you a scent-sational Monday!

I use this free service all the time and I love it! It’s a totally new way to wish friends and family members “Happy Birthday” no matter where in the world they live. And it is a lifesaver when I forget to plan ahead for a birthday. It’s called www.BirthdayDialer.com . It's an incredible new service that allows the user to select from a menu of fun musical birthday greetings and send one directly to your friends phones for free.

If you ask me, a phone call is always better than a card and I love stuff that’s free.

What a great discussion you started Tali! I love all these birthday traditions. You all are so creative...wish I would have met you all years ago. Our birthday rituals are:

1) we usually spend our kids actual birthday with them just as a family and let them choose one of their favorite restaurants for dinner (after I started my website, I signed them up for all kinds of free birthday meals, so now they ask me what emails they've received for their birthday & pick a restaurant from there).

2) we create our own birthday cards. I have to admit that the kids are much more creative than me, but making your own greeting cards means you have to use your own words inside and I'm continually blow away by what the kids have to say.

3) every year I create a birthday wish list that has the year on it and pictures of what they are into at that time - could be a video game screen shot, toy, movie or book they've read. Then they write down whatever they are wishing for - no limits. They know they won't get everything, but it's fun to dream and interesting to see what they come up with. I've done this since they were babies and I do it for Christmas as well. I've kept everyone and pull them out from time to time and share them with the kids - now 11 & almost 15. My DD's bday is on the 4th of July. :)

I love this thread so much I'll be writing a blog post about it!
