What is your home office set up??

  • Rating: 5 after 1 vote
I cannot get the right feel of my home office set up. I've tried having my work space set up out in the open (family room) so that I didn't feel so isolated from my family when I was working. That wasn't a great idea. I never got anything done.
So, now I am cleaning our spare room and making it into my home office/work space. Got new furniture to make it feel more like a work area and not just like another bedroom. (Which is was a spare bedroom turned "junk room"
So..I guess what I am asking. What has worked for you?
I am just not getting my stride on this :)))
Thanks!
Lori

My "office" if I can even call it that, is located directly in my living room.... I know the feeling about not getting anything done. With a 2 year old and a hubby on E.I for the winter, its a wonder I get anything done at all!

Angela,
It's totally maddening. I see all these cute pictures of home offices and I'm just not getting my groove with mine. Ack!

I've had a home office for about 10 years now and the setup has evolved as my family has. So it really depends on 'where' you are in life in terms of family- how old the kids are for example.

When my kids were younger I found the best setup was in a room toward the back of the house and still on the main floor. We had french doors installed instead of a solid door. This way I felt like I had some privacy yet was still close to the action and could keep an eye on things.

Now that my kids are older- 2 out of the house now - plus my husband has been deployed overseas for the past 9 months- this leaves just myself and our 16 year old daughter at home.

We have a formal dining room that we never use. Does anyone actually use formal dining rooms anymore?
I've shifted my office there now and my teenage daughter gets the family room/den area for a hangout for her and her friends.

Another thing that helps if you work from a laptop is to float around different areas of the house now and then- just for a change of scenery.

hmmm...after being one of the largest recruiters for Avon on the east coast in the past. I quit Avon...but had a home office big time for awhile....forget the snazz...go where the work is done...I have redone my office mega times and always ended up working on the kitchen table or in my mobile office my car...bottom line...do you want to make money or look pretty :) - Now I sell multiple party plans and write a national newsletter, and sell full time and just work where the action is...you get more done that way :)

I am in my family room, but kind of off in a corner a little bit. I was in an "office" until we had our 2nd son 6 months ago and needed that room. It is hard to get stuff done, but with 2 little ones this works best. I can easily check my email all day. I can work on the computer and make calls while they play or watch Noggin right behind me.

Before, my office was just in my bedroom since we don't have enough space. I don't know why
I can't work in a small place. So when we had house renovation, I made sure to include a separate room to be my office. I chose relaxing colors which are conducive for working.

I have it in my son's toy room-that way we can be hanging out & he can do his thing & I can do mine
