My 3 1/2 year old isn't ready for school just yet but some of his lunch favorites are:
Apple slices dusted with cinnamon
Yogurt with Kashi cereal sprinkled on top
The good old Peanut-butter and banana sandwich
My nine year old likes the following:
PB & J (I've learned to put PB on both sides of the bread before applying the jelly - that way, when the sandwich is closed, the jelly doesn't touch the bread. Much less chance of it getting "mushy" that way)
Cheesesticks
Apple slices (I've found that a whole apple easily gets bruised and she doesn't like soft spots on her apples - I just slice it with an apple slicer and then dip each slice in lemon juice so it doesn't brown)
Slices of pepperoni or salami
Granola bars
Pretzels
Carrot sticks
Bagel with cream cheese
My kids almost always take their lunch -- between dairy allergies and just not liking the school lunches it's been a way of life for us. I love this topic because after years of doing it things get old.
At the beginning of the school year I have each child make a list of foods they enjoy and then I let them put together their lunches taking a serving of 3-5 of their favorite foods. Some tried and trues:
Beef jerkey instead of a sandwhich
Peanut butter and Jelly rolled up on a tortilla
trail mix
mandarin oranges (Dole has small containers for lunches)
fruit crushers
carrot sticks
celery with peanut butter
I love Kelly's apples with cinnamon sprinkles -- can't wait to try it and PB & banana is awesome (pb&marshmallow creme if you're looking to break all the healthy rules :)
I need to pack my soon to be 3yo's lunch everyday (& breakfast!).
I usually send:
PB&J
PB&Fluff
Banana
Mandorian Oranges
Single Serve Applesauce (different flavors & always natural, no sugar added)
Flavored rice cakes
Granola Bars
Cereal Bars
Cheez its
Pretzels
Graham crackers & some mini marshmallows

My kids take their lunch a lot, my daughter loves cream cheese spread on a slice of ham and then rolled up and she likes chicken deli meat in a flour tortilla with ranch dressing and cucumber slices and lettuce and she takes raisins or craisins and celery with peanut butter spread down the middle.
