When do you start your Christmas decorating?

  • Rating: 5 after 1 vote
In my house, to my friends and extended family I am known as a huge Christmas decorator. My friend who just helped us move this summer commented that anyone who has 2 U- Hauls of Christmas decorations alone has too much Christmas stuff!

So when do you all start putting up your Christmas things. I have started as early as November 1st one year; not this year. I am a little late this year. I will be starting after Thanksgiving, probably Friday. How about you?

By tradition, we start the day after Thanksgiving. But being its our first Christmas at our new house I would have to start buying new decorations the day after Thanksgiving, so hopefully by the first week of December.

I have TONS of Christmas decorations - heavy on the deer motif because I've been collecting deer items since I was a small child...but I always refused to decorate for Christmas until after my birthday, because I got a lot of 'this is your Birthday AND Christmas present' gifts growing up - even though my birthday is 2 weeks before Christmas, it always seemed to get lost in the shuffle between Thanksgiving and Christmas. I always wanted to keep my birthday separate from either holiday. But as I got older, I realized that all the decorating I do for Christmas would be better served to enjoy for a longer period of time, rather than just 2 or 3 weeks - after all, it takes a long time to set it all up, I might as well enjoy the fruits of my labor! :) So then I started decorating around the first of December instead...but now it works out even better Thanksgiving weekend, because since I've had my daughter (who enthusiastically wants to decorate for every holiday, not just the 'main' ones that I have decorations for) I've collected a lot of Thanksgiving/Fall/Harvest type decorations that I put up before Halloween (I don't decorate specifically for Halloween - I prefer to keep it a 'general' Fall theme rather than ghosts and goblins), so I keep those decorations up until the day after Thanksgiving, then as I take down the Fall decorations put up the Christmas ones...and because I have so many Christmas decorations, it will definitely take me all weekend to put 'em up! :)

We start the Saturday after Thanksgiving to put the tree up and decorate it as a family. (Friday is for shopping!) We used to to is a week or so later but now that kids are in college we do it on their Thanksgiving break.

Funny, I just wrote a little post on this on my blog the other day. I grew up in a family where we didn't decorate until after Thanksgiving, and I still keep that tradition in our family now. At least I am trying very hard to stick with it! I'm one of those people that hate seeing stores promote Christmas earlier and earlier each year!

I am with you, I too have things I have collected for years and years. Mostly trees! I currently put up 8 trees all from 6 feet to 14 feet tall. Each year I want a new tree and new theme. So yes enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Being today is Thanksgiving eve we have a tradition that no Christmas music can be played until today! Yeah! Then we prepare all day and night for everyone tomorrow. My daugther is 13 this year and still loves this tradition she and I have created.

I usually don't start until the beginning of December, but it has been so cold it seems more like the holidays this year! My daughter has convinced me to start early, and she is already playing Christmas music!
